     Do nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits take much significance because they satisfy people’s needs that can not be solved by mainstream science? Initially I agree with this claim that some inquiries have useful functions in nowadays . However, after reflection I find that their function is very limited and in many cases do more harm than good to human beings .
   
        At first gaze, it is so tempting to accept the speaker’s assertion that nomainsrteam inquiries meet many human needs . People , no matter young or old , rich or poor , healthy or ill , are all curious about their future , which may even drive them seriously anxious . Since our formal science can never help in these fields , turning to fortune-telling and astrology become a good ,if not only one, choice . Besides , many persons believe in paranormal pursuits in fear of ill and death, miss of dead relatives, friends, hope of inquiring some kind of supernatural ability. Moreover , when confronted with difficulties  in making decisions , some people turn to nonmainsrteam inquiries for help. Seen from these examples it can readily get the speaker’s opinion.
   
        However , after a second thought the cases mentioned above in fact lend little credence to the claim that inquires really have good functions . First turn to the those inquires that involves individual future of health, fortune, marriage and so on . It is undeniable that good words from fortune-telling and astrology show some positive effect on individuals . For example, in some countries where whether a high school student can get into collage or university depend only on one exams , students who come to fortune-teller or astrology for some comfortable forecast about impending test may have a higher rate of good performance . The only explanation of this phenomenon is more confidence coming from inquiries but not luck and fortune. Yet, this is not a good way for two reasons . One is that there are many ways in getting confidence among which hard working is the best ,the other lies on that believe in inquiries often leads to laziness in study because young students tend to rely too much on fortune for a good result.      

       Turn next to those inquiries about life and death, health and illness. It is men’s nature to be afraid of death, so there comes many theories including haven , reviving , renascence . I concede that sometimes these theories can help to eliminate the fear of death , however, in more cases they directly or indirectly spurs people who are sad and depressed to suicide, which have been a serious social problem. Someone acclaims that they can cure some disease that can not be cured by modern medicinal technology such as cancer , AIDS . However , the result of this is either unreasonable treatment or no treatment, which may even leads to death of patients .
     
      Finally take a look at making decision. Everyone needs to make various decisions and  some of them are specially significant to one’s life , it is really painful when no one choice is obviously better than any other , so again , nonmainstorm inquiries takes part. Though asking a fortune-teller for choice is much less painful , it is too hasty to risk one’s future in this way similar with gamble . We should make decision based on our vision , interest , ability , situation and advices of friends , family , teachers rather than fortune-tellers, or in other words , swindlers.
     
     In sum , nonmainstream inquiries have some positive effect in consoling people, yet, when compared with negative effects they give us , I strongly disagree with that astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits are satisfy people’s needs. To meet their desires , they should rely on formal science and themselves rather than nonmainstream areas of inquiry
