The speaker implies that society should place more emphasis on intellect such as reasoning and other cognitive skills . Generally I agree with the speaker that more emphasis on intellect is needed in most aspects of society. But at the same time people should be aware of that morality and emotion also play a important role in our world.

First turn to learning and research of nature science. Since nature science is process that we get objective insight of world and universe, to rightly achieve this, logical analysis is badly needed. Every student in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy, geography and sorts of applicable technology should , or must, be guided to be aware of the importance of reasoning and develop the ability of analysis by learning of cognitive skills .Otherwise, lots of avoidable mistakes will occur in the area of science, which may seriously hamper the development of our cognition of world. History have suggests too much for the negative result of the ignorance of reasoning . For example, Aristotle asserted by felling that the speed of free falling of things with different mass varies , but later be proved foul by Galileo , which is a unforgettable event in the history of science. Today similar case are still happening , although very rarely. So in the area of nature science intellect is never be put too much emphasis .

Then take a look at the world of business where the situation is no less complex. In free market economy , the primary goal of enterprise is to maximize profit. Providing goods or services according to customers’ need and condition of market becomes a key role in profitability , which can never be done without the accompany of appropriate investigation .  The process of investigation needs much intellect and cognitive skills . Faced with large amount of date , files of papers of costumer interview , analysis without or with less logical thinking and reasoning but more subjective feeling is no more than gamble. Empirical experience also shows that companies who get into markets without sufficient analysis often fail . Take Yahoo for example , the company entered Chinese market several years ago with great ambition but get a complete failure as a result. The main reason for this is their own opinion that what Chinese customers need and like is same as those in U.S. but the fact is not. It is not imaginable that any business will success without the assistance of reasoning and cognitive skills , so companies should care more about intellect.

Even to fields of art where emotion is conventionally given priority , intellect can still find its place. Some works is created to help audience get a view of peoples , culture, events, problems in society. If artist is not capable of realize the society by logical reasoning and cognation , his/her work is likely to misguide people to artist’s own problematic opinion, in which case the value of the work may be discounted. And unfortunately the foregoing case occurs more and more in nowadays. Besides . intellect also pay audience in appreciating and evaluating artic works. Many times only feelings is not enough to fully understand a work, and by get information of the time, society, culture the artist live in and by analysis of those information can viewer get the meaning more completely . So more attention of intellect should be given both by artists and audience to make art function better in society.

However, too much emphasis on intellect may have some negative effects in personal development. When parents and schools put excessive emphasis on students , their emotional growth will be ignored , which is counterproductive to one of most significant purposes of education – to help one develop into a whole person both in intellect and emotion. Thus, we need to seek a balance between the two aspects.

In sum , the speaker’s assertion has merit in almost all fields of society because intellect serve as a important role in promoting the progress of mankind. However, while put more emphasis , we can not ignore the positive effects of emotion and get a balance because they are not mutually exclusive.
