In the long history of human beings, there have been numerous great individuals and famous people who have brought beautiful colors to the whole world. When observing their processes of receiving the acknowledgement provided by the society, there are two different conditions. Some of these great peoples were recognized by their contemporaries while there are also plenty of greatness of individuals only were decided only by those who live after them.

Many great people were initially ordinary ones before they were recognized as prominent individuals. The key fact of deciding the greatness of individuals is whether their ideas or activities have made contributions to society or academy. With his inventions of light and generator, which produce so much convenience to industry and people’s daily life, we regard Thomas Edison the greatest inventor in the humans’ history. With the unity of America which discontinued the divided situation, Americans regard Abraham Lincoln as the greatest leader. With the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA molecules, people offer the Nobel Prize to Watson and Crick who have revealed secrete of life to humans.

There are many great people have received the acknowledgement from their contemporary society, which indicate that greatness of individuals can be decide by contemporaries. Roosevelt has been judged as a successful and great president because of his new politics, as he brought significant develop to the American society; Picasso was regarded as the most creative artist by his contemporaries because of his numerous excellent works and innovations of the art style, which consequently brought great progress of the art. When the new theory of evolution proposed by Darwin, people consider his greatness because of his promotion to the science in biology. All of these famous people’s greatness have been decided by their contemporaries which has the certain condition and circumstance and can directly testify the advantage or disadvantage of contribution made by great individuals.

However, we cannot deny that there are also great individuals who did not merit recognition because their ideas or activities transcended their present period’s circumstance. In this case, evaluation by offspring and the people after them may be relatively fair and based on a wider comparison. Mentioning to this, I cannot help to think of better illustration than the example of Van Gogh, who was regarded as crazy with insanity by his contemporary, finally received the most respect from people at present and is admitted as the greatest master of impressionism. Since people in the same period of Van Gogh were not able to understand the deep and exact meaning can significance of his works, he lived a very poor life until he died. In science, there are also many instances, such as Copernicus who set up the theory that all planets including earth revolves around the sun, which challenged the long-time assumption that the earth was the center of the other planets. Because his right theory and research was regarded as heresy, he scarified unfairly and people after him realize his greatness. As people after a certain time can judge their history and preexist individuals more objectively for there are many things to be testified as right or wrong in a long time, the greatness of individuals can be decided more correctly by the people who living after them.

In sum, greatness of individuals can both be decided by contemporaries and those who live later, however, the latter may provide more accurate and objective criticism and judgment. However, people living in any period should keep their mind clear and fair to recognize the real greatness of individuals of their contemporaries so that there will be less unfairly treatment and attitude to those who are actually elites, which also creates great benefit and advantages to the present society.
