TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

No matter in ancientry or modern society, the nonmainstream, such as astrology, fortune-telling, etc, have their areas, even many people believe them. Then there comes question: whether the nonmainstream could satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. As far as I concerned, the nonmainstream could satisfy human needs for the moment, however, ultimately, the mainstream science will domain the society in future.

Admittedly, the nonmainstream has its domain to some extent. One existing in the world has the reason, the same to nonmainstream, which can give human the psychological solace, shift the burden from the life, satisfy human’s curiosities, and so forth. When the patients get later cancer, however, the doctor can not cure them because of the limited knowledge. At this time, the patients will shift from the mainstream science to nonmainstream; after all, the nonmainstream can give them the hope and psychological solace that they could live longer than expected. In addition, the astrology always indicates the human that it can see the future and predict the accident or the fortune, which looks very mysterious and attracts more attentions from the people who are curious about the preternatural things that the mainstreams science can not interpret now. Consequently, the nonmainstream is thrive in the society and may still exist in the short term.

However, overemphasize the nonmainstream is very detriment to people’s life and society. In fact, the nonmainstream always tells some things that do not actually exit in this world so that they can't solve anything except deceit; on the contrary, they always do some harmful things to the society. When the astrology tells people that the earth will disappear from the universe one year later, people who believe the astrology will feel despair and sleep every day rather than go to work, more badly, some began to do the crazy things, such as arson, robbing, etc which will destroy the  society's stabilization and make it into chaos. So it is very dangerous for our society when the nonmainstream is prosperous in people’s life.

Moreover, with the development of the science, the mainstream science will explain more things and predominate the society at last. Because of the complexity of the nature, many things can not be understand by the mainstream, however, which does not mean that the human can not find the explanation. With the accumulation of the knowledge, more and more mysterious have been solved by science. For example, people believe that the creature on the earth are all created by the god, however, the Darwin a well-known biologist of the Britain, published the Origin of  the Species, which successfully explain the variety of the species. Therefore, I have the confidence that the nonmainstream will retreat from the stage when more convincing facts are found.

In summary, through all the discussion above, we can safely reach the conclusion that the nonmainstream still exist in our society, however, with the development of the science, the mainstream will satisfy more human need and promote the society to a new level.
