Issue144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
  艺术家而不是评论家带给了社会一些具有持久价值的东西。 *评论家指的是评价艺术作品的人,例如小说、电影、绘画等。

I concede that artists create lasting values for our society, however, critics' contributions of helping convey lasting values to the public should not be ignored.  Before any lasting values been universal accepted, both artists and critics should make great efforts. Both of them are important, in other word, I don't agree with the speaker.

Admittedly, it is artists who create lasting values which have great influence to both individuals and societies. Great artists such as Beethoven, Raphael, Shakespeare and so forth immediately come to mind. These great artists' ideas are so great that astonish numerous people nowadays. It is Beethoven's symphonies encourage us to have confidence to overcome difficulties, Raphael's famous painting Sistine Madonna tell us what humanity is and Picasso's "pigeon" advocate remind people to cherish peaceful life. Furthermore, we know about what true love is from Shakespeare's masterpiece Romeo and Julia. Without those great artists, whose ideas reflect the nature of human beings and give us an effective way to recognize ourselves and the society we live in, we will don't have the chance to appreciate these profound works and our life may pale. It is these artists make our life more colorful and interesting.

However, the greatest tragedy for artists is that their ideas usually cannot be understood by the public directly. The reason is that masterpieces integrate artists’ talents and their unique experience, which the public rarely know. Artists express their deeply private feeling and vision of society in their artistic works, thus, it is only after we know what they have experienced we can reach the true value of their works. Taking Beethoven's symphonies for example, his early audiences could not accept his artistic works and regard it as banality. Why? Because they didn’t know what difficulties Beethoven faced and the pain in his intrinsic world. From this point, we can a broad gap between artists and their audiences, listeners or readers. Thus, society needs someone to bridge the gap, in this circumstance, a new occupation so called critics born. All they do is to interpret great ideas to the public; they research artists' experience and their works and the relationship between artists' inward felling and their thoughts; they know clearly about the life of artists, how artists reflect their intrinsic world in their works, what artists want to express and why they have certain ideas. All these works are important for the public to understand better about the artists and actually help the public to reach the inner world of artists.

To support my opinion, I want to take Van Gogh's famous painting "Sunflower" a case in point. For most people who were asked about why they like the painting, people can only give the answer that "Sunflower in Van Gogh's works is beautiful, he has great technique on how to arrange the color" or " sunflower is vivid in his works" at most. Don't know Van Gogh's experience and psyche state, the public judge from appearance and cannot get the marrow of the masterpiece. Only after critics tell them how Van Gogh's life like, the true value behind "Sunflower", the hope for future, can reach the public. Thus without critics' efforts, even great idea will live in oblivion. Just like one famous artist had said (I paraphrase) "Critics is something like light, without it, our artistic works can only tangible but cannot appreciable". From this perspective, critics are equally important with artists.

In the final analysis, artists invent great ideas while critic help to convey it to the public; this is just like a man who wants to get the treasure hung high in the air, without the help of ladder, the treasure may be hung their forever because no one can reach it. Simply put, critic is an effective and necessary supplement for artist as for great ideas to be true great ones.

写了一个小时,改了一个多小时,还是很难啊,要崩溃了
