TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 558 TIME: 01:22:36 DATE: 2008-2-16 下午 05:08:54
提纲:
1. 艺术家是所有艺术作品的最终作者,他们的功劳当然不容忽视;
2. 但是,评论家作为背后的作者,作用也是不可或缺;
3. 而且, 真正使得优秀作品价值lasting的应该是评论家。
The artist and the critic are the inherent twins. Creation of any valuable artwork costs a long period, during which the artisit thrives from young to adult as well as the artwork itself progress from rude to perfect, and these developments are always affected by critics now and then. Therefore, I would argue with the speaker that it is not only the artist, but also the critic, who together gives society someting of value, saying nothing of the critic making artwork's value lasting.
Admittdly, the artisit is the final author of any valuable artwork. Without Beethoven, who are predominant musician with imcomparable talent on music and devote all his life to artwork compositon, in spite of becoming deaf in middle age, our society would never have these immortal symphonies of lasting value, such as Hero and Fate, no matter what kind of hardwork had finished by critics. So in my consideration, without artists, art dies.
However, in the historical perspective, creation of any valuable art work cannot merely belongs to the final author, since no one is an inborn artist. The right art environment, such as art development level and trend of the time, the successive arts fortune accumulated, brings up the specific artists. From one generation to another, critics systematize art works, and lead to a more promising advancement both of the art itself and the society as a whole. Art works, as created by disparate individuals, are inevitable divergent in their comtents, styles, themes and so forth. And when they are presented in front of us, we may feel a kind of racket, because each stands alone. While critics, with expertise in specific art, probe the inbeing of them and calssify them in reasonable categories, in other words, make a 'crowd' into a 'group', making it more efficient for study by people and research by artists. Consider, for example, in music, there are classicism and romanticism. What's more, the existence of critic has created an ethos of more attention and research on art, greatly help the development of art. In such a flourished art environment, the artisit can fully thrived and make better artwork. So, critics are also authors of valuable artwork, though potential, not explicit.
Furthermore, when it turns to make excellent artwork's value really lasting, critics play an even more crucial role, as we always do not lack beauty of forever value in the world, but the eyes to find and appreciate it. Van Gogh left plentiful brilliant production for many years after his death, but majority of them had not been evaluated and apreciated until critics reveal them to public. And another example is Picasso. We would never know what Collage really means without critics' vivid and profound commentary. In short, critics serve as a filter, helping us discriminate great artworks from common ones, and a mirror, helping us to share the admiration of artists' courage and appreciate profound aesthetic feeling, and a recorder, keeping valuable artwork cherished in society many years later.
All in all, critics has contributed greatly to art work's creation and art environment's development, such as exhuming those valuable pieces overlooked by the masses, systematizing art work and creating a consummate world for art to survive and thrive. With the collaborative efforts from both the artists and critics, the spirit of our human beings can make progress all along.
