------题目------
Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
------正文------
What the speaker asserts above is quite reasonalbe, insofar as rituals and ceremonies are at least crucial elements of defining a culture. In other words, rituals and ceremonies give us certain identities and shape our cultural patterns, subject to proviso that there are other elements contributing to define a culture.
As it stands, a cultural pattern is closely linked with its history, mores and religion. Religion, usually presented as the form of rituals and ceremonies, plays a significant role in the social development. As early as the totem times, we began to have our own religions --- Gods and spirits ---- to comfort our vulnerable heart. A great number of people in the world still rely on them in that these rituals and ceremonies purify our spirits and make our minds peace. Great religional patterns are always implying profound wisdom. Many philosophers holds a religional belief. For example, Buddism has a long history in China. The monks in the Chinese temples are commonly thought as saints of humanbeings. Recearch has even proven that holding a religional beliefe can reduce the probability of one's disease rate (such as heart disease and mental disease).
Unfortunately, nowadays society is working on the basic idea of more product and higher effeciency, with litte regard with the innermost world of humanbeings. Many many religional patterns are disappearing, especially in rural districs and minory nations. The value of these religions should not be determined by its actual productivity or its spreading range. These rituals and ceremonies benefits people, help us our from the endless river of annoyances, conficts, and tortments. They are our spiritual hesitage, and our past which, if we lose them, our future generations may lose themselves.
The quotation above conceals other interesting conotations far above the rituals and ceremonies. How human's society forms a diversity patterns of culture depends on so many defining elements including history, language, custom religion and other situation of a country. The sense of "self" is closely related with one's culture and circumstance, not only hie/her religional belife. In a recent survey, most present-day Chinese do not have religional beliefe and seldom can any rituals and ceremonies be seen. This is not the same thing as that we Chinese have not a mutual culture. The mutual customs and language already give a certain identity to each Chinese. Circumstances have surely exert an subtle effect on a person during his/her growing process.
In conclusion, before embarking on the boat of rapid developping society, we have to rethink the way we are living. It is our indisputable responsiblity to protect the religonal heritage uaually in forms of rituals and ceremonies. These are valuable treasures and deposits which can stand the test of time. In additon, we should also be aware of other defining elements in shaping a culture. Humanbengs have to make a balanced and well-rounded development of our cultures to gain a properous in the future.
