Is it true that the education has little effect on promoting the social harmony,  because it encourages students to question and criticize? Obviously, the speaker thinks question and critique to be unuseful or even harmful to promote the social harmony. However, even I partially agree with the speaker that undue question and critique do impede the progress of creating a more harmonious society, proper way to question and criticize can impel the progess.

To begin with, education plays a significant role in equiping our children with original thoughts and critical thinking, which might be the most important things for an individual to compete in the society. In this sense, education should not pour mass information to the students, or just mislead them by trusting rigidly whatever they have learned. This might be dangerous. In the individual level, this might circumscribe the students' imagination, creativity and learning ability, all of which are very important to be competitive and independent in this fast-changing world. In the society level, if without any no questioning and criticizing, there would not be any advancement. The most patent manifestation of this might be in the science field. When scientists were examing the nature of light, whether it was particle or wave. But at that time, Newton, who was the most outstanding scientist, believed that light is particle. Unfortunately, Newton's fame and authority in science field, made most scientists believe his idea, which impede the progress of finding the true nature of light. If the students are not taught to question and criticize, how many meaningful discoveries and breakthough in any realm will be covered? We should always bear in mind that the social harmony is likely to be promoted with the development of  economy, culture and science.

Secondly, for further examination, when comes to politics, question and critique are necessary to impel the development of creating more equal and efficient society system, which means a lot to promote the social harmony. Take Martin Lurthur King for example. When he was in the college, he always questioned about the existed segregation in the southern USA. The belief that every was created equal was with him all his life, and became the impetus for his later efforts on seeking for the equal rights of the black. Some people might strongly argue that the parade lead by Martin Lurthur King exactly destroy the harmony of the society. However, I would say what King did was lying the foundation of the social harmony. Because equality between any race, sex and age is the basic human rights in a democracy society. And what King had done is to fulfill the dream of this principle, and the commitment even from President Lincoln. You can easily imagine in an unequal society, the blace were treated as commodity, who faced the cruel destiny, and the white dominated the privilege. How can social harmony be realized in this situation, let alone to be promoted?  

Admittedly, undue question and critique do little to promote social harmony, as the speaker claims. If every student criticizes and repels the government's policy,  without thinking whether the policy is right or wrong, no progress will be possibly made.  And if every student questions the basic laws of science, no knowledge will be gained, because those basic laws are exactly the step-stone for the science to thrive on.

To sum up, education encourage students to question and criticize, in order to bring the students to form original and creative thoughts,  to challenge, and more important, to impel the development of the society.  Whatever fields they might question and criticize, like science and politics, they should hold the principle that they are not criticizing for the sake of itself, but aim for the harmony of the society. This will make them understand more about their tasks, and do good to promote social harmony.
