Issue 150 “Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete.
With the development of computer science and technology, the dream that receiving information we need and learning events happenning all over the world without stepping out of the house has already come true.It is no doubt that the television and worldwide computer connections bring us vivid descriptions about different places, cultures and nations, still,I oppose to the speaker's view that television and worldwide computer connections will soon render the tourism obsolete for the reasons given below.
First, the true meaning of tourism is not just that people get some secondhand information about places in certain ways as what the speaker supposes. Though through the television and the Internet, we can see pictures of the golden sands, we can watch the waves of the sea, we can see people happily picking lovely shells and algae, and what is more, we are able to hear all the songs of the seabirds. Our curiosities are still not satisfied by these without really going to the beach, because only when we take a tour there, we can actually feel the soft sand, surf bravely in the sea, collect the beautiful shells, breathe the air with the smell of algae, sing together with the gull, and even taste the salty sea. Only by tourism we can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste truly.
Second, from the empirical facts that people still go out for dinner and movies, we can conclude that tourism will not be deserted. People always want to change the circumstances they live in or get rid of the routines time to time, which can be regarded as an instinctive need. And tourism gives splendid chances for citizens to change the usual states by visiting a new place and by feeling a new cultural. We can try different foods, which may be weird but delicious, wear other nations' clothes that are quite different from our unchanged type of suits. The Internet or televisions obviously cannot fulfill these instinctive needs.
Admittedly, television and the Internet show us a convenient access to the world. Without visiting some place in the world, we are also able to get familiar with it., for we can learn whatever we want to know about the places, such as the languages spoken in there, the history of the nation and so on. By studying these, our curiosity may rise and then we might be even more willing to take a journey there. In this way, we can say that television and computer connectivity pique our curiosity and thus bolster the tourism to some extent.
To sum up, the television and worldwide computer connections will neither inhibit the development of tourism nor leave it obsolete. On contrary, the television and the Internet may probably bring the boom of the tourism.
