Can scandals --- whether in politics, academia, or other areas—be useful? In my view although they may focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could, they have more negative effects on the society, in that they weaken the public confidence in supervisory bodies and credit and even lead to social instability.

To some extent, scandals can be useful in solving certain problems, because they reveal the hidden troubles and draw public attention on the solving of the issues. For example, it was reported that in an international cycling competition some riders, involved in drug abuse, were banned from the race. As a result, under the public pressure the governing body of cycling adopted new measures to deal with the problem and became stricter on the examination of the use of performance-enhancing drugs. This illustrates the point that under certain circumstance scandals are helpful in finding and resolving problems. Simply put, without scandals, the public may not be aware of the matter until it is too late to repair. Thus the society would suffer a great loss when the disastrous result comes.

On the other hand, although scandals play a positive role in some cases, taking one with another, their negative effects overweigh the beneficial ones by bringing about wildly-spread suspicion of credit. For instance, the scandals of the sport competitions damage the reputation of the games and weaken the people’s support for them. As a result, the distrust of the public would impede the development of the sport games. Furthermore, once the disbelief is aroused, hardly can it be put away. The obsession of the public with endless discussions and investigations would lead to a waste of public resource and overlooking other essential matters and cause more serious problems.People may pay much attention on the scandal and even negelect other issues in sport games: the unfair judgement, the bribe, the safty of the athelets, etc.

Moreover, some scandals are merely rumors but can result in disasters in society, in that they bring about the moral degradation and public insecurity. Taking the rumors in political campaigning as an example, in order to defeat rivals the scandals, aiming at ruining the opponents’ images, are spread by some media purposely. They attract public attention on the private life of the candidates: their marriage, their children, theri health condition, their financial issue, their performance at school, etc. Instead of helping people make right decisions, they confuse people with malicious words. Not only would they distract public attention to some disgraced fake stories, but they also cause people to lose faith in their candidates and even worse vote for the unqualified ones. Thus the society would fall into confusion and instability.

In sum, the benefit of scandals to discover and solve problems is rather limited, in comparison of their damage to the society. They belong to an abnormal method to discover problems and could result in serious troubles in the society. We should rather resort to some effective ways than using scandals when try to resolve problems.
