【题目】174
The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.
"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumna who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumna to keep supporting the college financially."

In the recommendation, the arguer asserts that it is better for Grove College to preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs based on two surveys. One is taken by students in school, with eighty percent respondences wanting the school to remain all female. The other is taken by alumnae also opposing coeducation. Besides, the arguer considers keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumna to keep supporting the college financially. However, the conclusion mentioned neglecting other possible alternatives seems not so compelling, while some assumptions and evidence also prove to be unwarranted and dubious after a fully scrutiny.
First of all, the major problem with this argument is that the result of the survey lacks credibility, because it is highly possible that the sample is too limited, and therefore could not lend strong support to the arguer’s conclusion. The arguer claims that eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, nevertheless what is the total number of students who take the survey? Are the surveyors is representative? Unless the arguer provides us with the detail information about the survey, we cannot judge whether the survey is valid. It is the same as the survey taken by alumnae, for the reason that we cannot rule out the possibility only the ones who oppose coeducation answer the survey.
Second, another fault that weakens the argument is that the arguer fails to establish a causal relationship between keeping the college all-female and improving morale among students as well as convincing alumna to keep supporting the college financially. Perhaps, coeducation will improve morale rather than keeping the college all-female. If students don’t like all females in the school, still keeping all- female may bring a decrease of morale. Besides, no evidence indicates that the alumnae will not continue to support the college financially after the coeducation. They support may because they love their school, and no matter their college coeducation or keeping all-female, they will always do the help.
Finally, before I come to my conclusion, it is necessary to point out another flaw that the arguer ignores other advantageous of coeducation and disadvantageous of keeping the college all-female. For example, coeducation may provide a better circumstance for the students to communicate while only female is not likely to be good for the development of students.
To sum up, the argument is not reasoned as it stands. To make it logically accepted, the arguer would firstly make the surveys valid and also have to take other relative factors into account.
