Argument174:
The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.
'We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially.'

In this argument, the president and administrative staff of Grove College recommend Grove College to preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. To support their recommendation, they cite two surveys: one is aim at students on campus; the other is aim at graduates of Grove College. Careful examination of this supporting evidence, however, reveals that it lend little credible support to the arguer's claim.

First of all, the two surveys might be problematic. We are not informed whether survey responses were anonymous, or even confidential. If they were not, then respondents might have provided responses that they believed their teachers or scholastic leaders approve of, regardless of whether the responses were truthful. Additionally, the statistics as to the survey is not detailed. The proportion of the respondents among the total students or whole alumna in the Grove College is not mentioned. Although there is a large proportion of students or alumna responding want the school to remain all female, maybe whole respondents' population accounts for a small part of all students or alumna in Grove College. In that case, the survey cannot represent the real thought of whole students or alumna in Grove College. In either event, the survey results would be unreliable for the purpose of drawing any conclusion about preserve Grove College's century-old tradition.

Secondly, the arguer points out that keeping the college all female will convince alumna to keep supporting the college financially. This is unwarranted. It cannot infer that if Grove College claims coeducation, alumna will stop supporting the college financially. Also, the arguer do not investigate the financial amount by alumna who oppose coeducation, or investigate the attitude of alumna who give larger financial support. Thus the view that policy of coeducation in Grove College will affect the financial support is groundless.

Thirdly, there is no evidence that keeping the century-old tradition of all-female education will promote morale among students. The arguer fails to balance the advantages and disadvantages as to an action. That is to say, the arguer overlooks the shortage of all-female education and the predominance of coeducation. For example, coeducation makes students more active, all-around development. Without considering these factors, the conclusion about keeping all-female education is too hasty.

In sum, the argument not only lacks of information but also relies on several doubtful assumptions. To strengthen the argument the arguer must provide more exact and detailed information about the survey. The arguer must also investigate the attitude and situation of alumna who support Grove College financially. Finally, the arguer should balance the advantages and disadvantages of both policies.

Careful examination of this supporting evidence, however, reveals that it lend lends little credible support to the arguer's claim.

Although there is a large proportion of students or alumna responding want the school to remain all female, maybe whole respondents' population 直接用the respondents你看怎么样? accounts for a small part of all students or alumna in of Grove College. In that case, the survey cannot represent the real thought of whole students or alumna in Grove College. In either event, the survey results the results of the surveys would be unreliable for the purpose of drawing any conclusion about preserve preserving Grove College's century-old tradition.
Secondly, the arguer points out that keeping the college all female will convince alumna to keep supporting the college financially. This is unwarranted. It cannot infer that if Grove College claims coeducation, alumna will stop supporting the college financially.你的反证法用的不错,学习ing Also, the arguer do not investigate the financial amount这里好像缺个谓语动词,你看用supported可以吗? by alumna who oppose coeducation, or investigate the attitude of alumna who give larger financial support. Thus the view that the policy of coeducation in Grove College will affect the financial support is groundless.

To strengthen the argument the arguer must provide more exact and detailed information about the survey the two surveys?. The arguer must also investigate the attitude and situation of alumna who support Grove College financially. Finally, the arguer should balance the advantages and disadvantages of both policies.
