In the modern era of technology and science, is it necessary for our society to pay more attentions on the intellect-that is , on reasoning and other cognitive skills? The answer is certain. In my point of view, the intellect is so fundamental and significant for human beings to understand the world that our educators should put it on the first place. Nevertheless, we cannot overlook the importance of emotions.

In the first place, intellect including the reasoning and cognitive skills is the basic capacity for human to survive in this complicated and hyper-competitive world. The society must emphasize the development of these skills on the individuals. The preeminent developmental psychologist Piaget points out, as a human being, an individual has four basic intellect developmental phases: the sensory motor phases, the pre-operational phases, the operational phases, the former operational phases. In his theory, the process of the intellect development can be described as one in which individuals gradually obtain the reasoning，cognitive skills, and other abstract mental power. When we have the capabilities of logical thinking, the insight of perceiving surroundings, the foresight of predicting what will happen, we can deal with the problems we met maturely and calmly. Moreover, with logical reasoning and critical thinking, we begin to suspect the accepted and authorial theories and create the new world. If Einstein believe that Newton's dominated physics theories are accurate in any event, then there is no great theory of relativity today and human's utilitarian of nuclear energy will be postponed for several centuries. Without perceiving the surroundings, Benjamin cannot save millions of lives during the Second World War by discovering the penicillin. In all likelihood, with the intellect, individuals can make great contributions to the society and the society can become more stable and prosperous.

The manifest of the intellect should be especially emphasized in the educational realm. It is a common phenomenon that current students always accept the large quantities of knowledge passively but without their own independent thoughts. With the convenience of Internet, they can obtain the effective solutions quickly and accurately. But when the easy-find solutions have some contradiction with the real statistic of the experiments, they can do nothing to them. Even today, in some universities of America, students use their calculators to make some simple arithematic. Over two centuries before them, the great mathematician-Gauss, 12 years old, noticed that when he added 1 to 100, there are 50 similar couples which shared the same sum 101, and as a result, he invented the Gauss al algorithm. To an educator, the most significant purpose is to cultivate the intellect of students, to teach the students how to master the reasoning, critical thinking, perceiving and cognitive skills. Some opponents may ask the question: Are the student majored in arts required to learn these skill? Admittedly, to prepare to be the artist, students who learn arts should express their emotions and minds on their artistic works, however, they also need to learn the basic skills-to perceive the aesthetical creatures and formulate their images in their mind, then use the brushes and colors to depict them out. Thus, the intellect such as logical thinking and cognitive skills are essential and indispensable for students.

Admittedly, intellect is the ability of individuals to survive and the guarantee of the society's stability and prosperity. Nevertheless, our society should pay proper attention on our human emotions. Common sense informs us that humans are the emotional animal, we have synpathy, aversion, depression, happiness and complicated emotions. In other words, human beings are an integrate body of various emotions. With the high speed of science and technology, the rhythm of our modern life was accelerated, and many of us are suffering from the pressure of working, the depression of divorcing, and other emotional storm. Yet our society should focus on people's emotions and psychologist. According to the recent survey, over 68% of the crimes are nowadays emotional crimes. Under several pressures, people can hardly control their emotions and they easily loss their tempers. The focused "School Violations" are typically reflecting many people especially teenagers are lacking of sufficient psychological directions. Therefore, while the society emphasizes intellect, it should pay the same focus on human's emotions.

In sum, in the rapid development of science and technology, to master the reasoning and cognitive skills is an essential capacity for individuals to survive in the hyper-competitive world. Besides, our educators should put the intellect education on the first place. In the final analysis, our society should pay the same focus as on intellect as on human's emotions, only if both of intellect and emotions was emphasized, our society could be more stable and prosperous.
