36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
The speaker said that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries. I insofar disagree with the speaker. In my view, whether individuals' greatness can be recognized correctly is relied on whether people's minds are external then. Though people's minds are developing every day, there are some valuable things that never
exchanged.
For example, the faith for freedom and equality will always be one of the valuable things. A familiar famous person most people knows is Martin luther King. He and his famous speech "I have a dream" has aptly illustrated this point. As a black, Martin was always fighting for freedom and equality using his own way. In addition, he is the most famous one who was calling for the freedom of the blacks and his greatness had been decided then. Another famous people who was always seeking for the freedom is Zhou Enlai, but he was seeking for the country's freedom. The login that "studying for the standing of China" was his faith. He had been engaged in doing this in his whole life which leads to the result that he finally attain his goal. His greatness had been decided then and will remain for ever. Why could their greatness be decided even them? Just because what they were striving for were valuable things that will never change.
On the other hand, there are a lot of people whose greatness can only be decided by their contemporaries for the reason that people then could not recognize what is right and what is wrong in some field.
One possible reason is that people then were under the control of some governments who restricted their people's thinking bitterly. So some real faith may be ignored or recognized as a wrong one while the wrong one may be thought to be correct. We can hold the example of Copernicus. In fifteenth century, though some people began to doubt the theory that the earth is at the center of the university, the government forbided people to think that. So when Copernicus founded the theory that the sun is at the center of the university, it was forbided by the to transmit. After 3 centuries, his theory had completely won and people recognized his greatness.
The other reason is that the great people's minds are advanced than other people and little people can understand his theory. Here, I want to tell the story of E.calois who founded the group theory. He was a very young and brilliant person who dead at the age of 20. When was alive, he made the group theory and delivered it to Poisson. But Poisson could not understand the theory though using 4 months to read it. The result is that he refused to admit the theory was right. It was true that no one could understand the theory until 14 years after Calois' death when Liouville tried to explain it and published the theory. From then on, people began to know this young and brilliant man and his greatness.
So, in sum, I don not agree with the speaker insofar because it is true that some people's greatness were decided by those who live after them, but a lot of people can be decided by their contemporaries. What decide this is whether most people's minds then are external and correct. Above all, it is too absolute for the speaker to say "only".
