TOPIC：ISSUE 36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

It is true that, greatness of individuals, which is something that has a valuable long-lasting influence to the society, sometimes can be decided by the contemporaries, however,  usually those who live after them can give a true evaluation about the greatness.

Admittedly, sometimes the contemporaries can decide whether the individual achieves greatness. Some benefits of the individuals’ achievement can easily been seen as soon as it is born. For example, the invention of planes satisfies people's dream to travel like a bird, and it is considered a greatness immediately after its birth; Washington who lead the Revolutionary War is generally considered as a great man by his people; Chopin whose music can offer people an excellent feeling is generally considered as a great musician in his living time.

However, those who live after the individuals can evaluate them correctly while their contemporaries may give a false decision. When the quantum theory was born, which insisted on that everything in the world happened by a certain chance, a lot of scientists represented by Einstein opposed it strongly, so it was not widely accepted until many years later when people found that it can explained many experiments correctly, and now this theory is even considered as a milestone of modern physics. When Hitler decided to start the World War Two, the majority of Germen supported him with little people doubt, they thought it would be a greatness, but people after the war may clearly see that it lead to the depression of the world.

Furthermore,, those who live after the individuals can find out the greatness of them while their contemporaries did not detect. As people's knowledge increase, they can consider more comprehensively to evaluate the achievements of individuals. When Lao Tse developed the ideology of Taoism, hardly any people who live at that time put much value on it, so that this theory was not given much concern, but as people’s ideology developed, the theory is considered as greatness which influents Chinese for hundreds of years. In the past people thought it was naturally that women should not receive the same rights as men, and a lot of forerunners who fought for the equal rights of women was not famous, but as more and more people accept the idea of democracy, they may decide that the effort is great struggle against discrimination.

In sum, although sometimes the contemporaries can decide the greatness of individuals, those who live after them usually can make a decision more objectively.
