TOPIC:ISSUE 153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
提纲:有保留的赞同
1 置疑和对老观点的挑战在学习过程中扮演了重要的角色。
2 然而skepticism is different from the logical reasoning and critical thinking 过分的怀疑会是自己什么都学不到
3 对问题的仔细分析和调查比置疑更重要,影响学生做出最佳的选择和决定。
In the modern society in which education plays a larger and more important role, no one can deny that students should possess the suspicious attitude about learning rather than accepting what their teachers taught passively and even reluctantly. Thus, in my point of view, I strongly agree with the statement on the foundation that students should question and challenge the old concepts, nevertheless, to my reservation, the undue suspicion might lead them to miss the most useful and helpful experience and skills.
First and foremost, with the development of technology and science, human beings tend to be lazy and careless about the suspiciousness about the old and accepted principles and theories. Thus, the purpose of the modern education which emphasizes the skeptical ability of students becomes more and more important. From the retrospect to history, we can find that human beings made a succession of progress during the learning process by questioning the previous ideas and theories. Consider the development of astronomy, no one can deny the contributions of Copernicus' heliocentric which suspected and challenged the traditional earth centric theory propagandized by the authorial Catholicism for a long period of time. Additionally, we need not to go further to look at another simple example in the realm of physics. Due to the skepticism about the great Newton theories, Einstein discovered the famous theory of relativity. Therefore, the progress of human civilization mostly depend on the suspicion of the ascendants in our learning process and in the modern era, it is still the human nature of skepticism that stimulate our young students to think and pracftice more.
Nonetheless, we cannot equal the ability of doubting and challenging with the capacity of logical reasoning and critical thinking which play a more significant role in students' learning. Common sense informs us that students cannot learn the inherently useful experience and skills if they pay undue attentions on suspecting the textbooks or teachers without any consideration of the root and inherence of the issues. What we are instilled and imparted by the professors, to some extent, are the precious experience and useful skills from our precursors and therefore complete suspicion about them will be meaningless and even harmful for students' learning. Moreover, people's undue doubts about the existing principles, theories or the accepted morality and ethics would not only bring the detrimental effects to individuals but also destruct the society's harmony. Therefore, an educator should conduct students' thoughts and behaviors to the correct orientation and cultivate their capability of critical thinking and logical reasoning.
Any qualified student should own the ability of logical reasoning and critical thinking which means they should make the concrete and comprehensive analysis and investigations independently before giving their personal and final conclusions. As some experts in the field of education point, the process of critical thinking and logical reasoning are always more important and beneficial to students than the acute observations with suspicious eyes and ultimate decision or suggestions. Without the basis of trials, surveys, analysis and practice, we are hard-pressed to imagine that a student could finally achieve his/her goal only through the speculation which accords with skepticism. According, it is the critical thoughts that lead students to reveal, analyze and eventually solve the complex problems they meet in the learning process, and it is also this outstanding ability that contributes them to make the optimal judgment or even spark the creativity and originality. With the insight and critical thinking, young John Nash applies the mathematic ideas into the demonstration of some economic phenomena, which eventually won him the Nobel Prize. Thus, students should pay their efforts on the analysis and investigation but not merely doubt or censure the accepted principles. Otherwise, educators and the society as a whole should more focus on the cultivation of students' capability in critical thinking and logical reasoning.
To sum up, I concede the speaker insofar as students should learn any subject with the skepticism Learning is a process which is complete with questions and challenges, nevertheless, students should pay more efforts on the analysis and investigations about the complex issues with logical reasoning and critical thinking, which would benefit their learning and lead them to make the optimal decisions ultimately. |
