73The following appeared in a memo from a manager of a car dealership.
"Ten years ago, long-term car leasing became available in our country of Mohilia as an alternative to outright car ownership, and leasing has steadily risen in popularity. For each of the last five years, the number of people leasing new cars has surpassed the number buying new cars. The average age of cars driven in Mohilia is six years; hence, if new car leases again outnumber purchases this year, it is likely that the majority of drivers will be driving leased, not individually owned, cars. Therefore, we should change the focus of our business from selling cars to leasing them."
This author assumes that if new car leasing again outnumber purchase this year, it is likely that there will be more people leasing rather than purchasing cars. However, the assumption based on “some facts” doesn’t make any sense, and the reasons are not cogent. Not to say the suggestion that given behind them.
To start with, the author stated that the average age of cars driven in Mohila is six years and in each of the last five years the new car leases always outnumber purchases, so that the majority of drivers will probably driving leased. But the “six years” doesn’t have relationship with the “last five years” and “this year”. It may mislead us by the opinion that after this year people will mostly finish their own-car -driving time and start to decide whether to buy again or lease. Because people who start to buy their cars cannot in the same time—six years before, this number is useless. So we cannot make the conclusion that cars leasing will outnumber the purchases.
In addition, the author have other “facts” to illustrate, one of which is that the number of people leasing new cars has surpassed the number of buying new cars in each of the five years. However, it cannot be the reason that the leasing number will go on surpass the purchasing number in the future, and the it cannot reflect people’s wills of choosing. In contrast, this phenomenon may have other possibilities. On one hand, the people who don’t have their own cars frequently lease new cars to satisfy their need. Imagine that each man will only buy himself one car but each man will not likely lease car for only one time. On the other hand, some people plan to buy a new car but haven’t decided yet , so they leased the similar new cars to just have a try, and find whether after a time they will buy them or not. After enjoying many times driving some new cars, they will make a decision on which one is their favorite, and then the purchasing number will become larger.
Another fact is that leasing number has steadily risen for 10 years. But the author doesn’t give proper conclusion of whether this will continually happen after 10 years. Maybe it is because of the beginning of leasing cars, and most people find it fresh and interesting, so a large quantity of people choose to have a try. However, there isn’t any survey of people’s real reasons of choosing leased cars and the detailed reasons for the rising numbers, thus we cannot have proper assumption for people’s wills in the future.
As a result, the conclusion and suggestion that the author make can’t base on any sound reasons. And what’s more, the author implies the profit, which is also weak in conclusion. For one thing, selling a new car may have more profit than leasing several new cars, and because we cannot assume whether the leasing number will continually rise in the future, we cannot conclude that the focus on leasing cars will benefit more.
For another thing, even if the people’s quantity of leasing are more than the purchasing, we have to raise a doubt that is there so many “new” cars for leasing? After one has finished leasing in a short time for a cheap payment, this car may not be needed again because people all want to lease new cars, then there will result in waste of money but not profit. And for this reason, to sell cars can be a long-term choice.
