190The following is a letter to the editor of the Glenville Gazette, a local newspaper.
'Over the past few years, the number of people who have purchased advance tickets for the Glenville Summer Concert series has declined, indicating lack of community support. Although the weather has been unpredictable in the past few years, this cannot be the reason for the decline in advance ticket purchases, because many people attended the concerts even in bad weather. Clearly, then, the reason for the decline is the choice of music, so the organizers of the concert should feature more modern music in the future and should be sure to include music composed by Richerts, whose recordings Glenville residents purchase more often than any other contemporary recordings. This strategy will undoubtedly increase advance ticket purchases and will increase attendance at the concerts.'

提纲:1。the author fails to rule out other facts other than the choice of music that may cause the decline of the GSC' tickets purchasing.
2。the advice which aims at featuring more modern music including the music composed by Richerts is groundless.
3。the author also neglects some details of the problem which should deserve particular attention first in trying to draw his conclusion.

In the letter of the editor of the Glenville Gazette(GG), the author concludes that the main reasons for the decline of the tickets sales of the Glenville Summer Concert (GSC)should be attributed to the choice of music. Based on this assumption, he suggested that the organizers should feature more modern music including that composed by Richerts.

With no doubt, this argument is well-organized in presenting the author's suggestion, however, due to some fallacies in the inference of his conclusion, we may not accept his ideas, generally.

On the one hand, the author fails to rule out other facts other than the choice of music that may cause the decline of the GSC' tickets purchasing. Even though the point that bad weather did not prevent the local people from attending the concert, many other factors may possibly lead to the situation in GG, for example, there may be some other more interesting programs or entertainment which currently attracts the audience. Therefore, the more objective way for the author to consider handling the decline is to find out the real causes indeed based on specific survey and investigation. It will be too haste to blame totally on the choice of music under this circumstance.

On the other hand, supposedly, if we concede that the choice of music really plays the most important part dominating the decline, nevertheless, the advice which aims at featuring more modern music including the music composed by Richerts is groundless. Primarily, the author provides no evidence to support his assumption here that the local audience love modern music very much and will definitely buy tickets to watch those concertos. Moreover, the author neither gives us any information that the GSC used to play classical or other kinds of music much more than the modern style. What's more, the hot recordings of Richerts have no necessary relation with the possibilities that his concerto will enjoy the same success. In short, the insufficient evidence of the actual choice of music among the local people can not amount to the strategy to increase modern music in the GSC.

Finally, the author also neglects some details of the problem which should deserve particular attention first in trying to draw his conclusion. For example, the real problems is that the local audience buy fewer "advance" tickets than before, yet this does not warrant that people show little interest in purchasing the tickets by other means like retail ones. Furthermore, we have no idea about how bad the weather has been in the past few years, which will probably stop the audience to buy the tickets if it is really too serious. The people may attend the concerts in the bad weather that is relatively much better which permits the audience to attend the concert still.

In conclusion, the main problems that make the advice of the author unconvincing are the insufficient evidence and subjective deduction without really surveys. So the author may have to look into the problems again before we accept his advice.
