36 "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
提纲
观点:当代人和后代都可以评价
1.个人的伟大是可以被当代人认同的(Shakespeare, Mother Teresa)
Stephen Hawking will undoubtedly go down as one of the truly great. Few people would not acknowledge his as much.
2.有些人可能由于过于新颖、大胆的观点和视角而不被当代人认同,随着时代进步,人们认知水平的提高,他们也许会被后人认同(Van Gogh, Einstein, Bruno)
How can the greatness of individuals be decided, by their contemporaries or by the successors? Notions differ greatly to different people. Some people hold the opinion that the individuals’ greatness could be only decided by those who live after them, while others deem that the greatness could be realized by their contemporaries. From my point of view, both the contemporaries and the successors can evaluate the greatness of individuals only if they have developed a complete understanding of those individuals.
On the one hand, the greatness of individual could be recognized if their contributions could be understood within the current cognition system. Any evaluation indeed is based on the agreement of people that are living in the same period. For instance, the great writer, Shakespeare has been greatly valued from his period till now, not only in that his works are classic masterpieces no matter in terms of mastery of rhetoric or his harshness of the dramatic conflictions, but also for the humanism that complied with groundswell during the Renaissance are emphasized throughout his works. His works can resonate his contemporary readers. Consider another case, Mother Teresa, a great humanitarian known throughout the world for her charity towards the poor and her firm and passionate pro-life stance. Even today Mother Teresa is often cited as a high moral figure. As we can see from these cases, only when the contributions and greatness can be understood by the people living in the same time, these individuals’ greatness could be decided at that time.
On the other hand, when human’s cognition system has not reached the high level as those particular individuals, the greatness of individuals is hard to be appraised by their contemporaries, even be neglected and be assaulted in its nascent stages. History is replete with such cases. The well-known Holland painter, Vincent Van Gogh is now regarded as one of the greatest artists whereas during his time few people could appreciate his arts and postimpressionism. Different from the conventional arts during that period, Van Gogh’s art style was not recognized by his contemporaries. Another case in point is Bruno, who used Copernican principles in formulating his cosmic theory of an infinite universe. The idea of Bruno that drastically impacted on the contemporary system of knowledge shattered the very basis of value system into pieces. Because of the idea is so alien to their traditional one, it is antagonized. However, what he held on to has become the common knowledge in our era.
To sum up, the greatness of individuals could be realized by the temporal knowledge only when the system of our cognition and knowledge is enough to understand those contributions. Otherwise, their greatness could be valued only by their successors as the development of human cognition system. |
