The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
'For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses.'

This memo aims at suggesting us to discontinue stocking the imported cheese and concentrate on domestic ones. The main reasons for this conclusion are the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store and a recent survey by cheeses of the World magazine.

The argument is well-presented for us to understand. However, the conclusion is far from the evidence, which makes it as unwarranted as it stands.

Primarily, the first evidence that the author cites should be put into questions. It has no necessary relationship with the author's statement. First of all, the sales condition of the newest store is not representative to prove that all the local stores' best-selling cheeses are domestic ones. Second, the cheeses from Wisconsin sell the best does not have necessary relation with the fact that all the domestic products from different places can be welcome at the same level. Last, even assuming the situation of the newest store can be fitted into other's condition, however, the author also fails to find out that cheddar cheeses is just one kind of cheeses and it can not assure the other types' sales. In sum, the first evidence is insufficient for the author to get the point.

Secondly, the recent survey which is used as the other major evidence is questionable too. On the one hand, we have no idea about the specific factors of the survey for the sample size of the subject, how the questions are organized and an accurate statistics of the survey to show the details, etc. All the missing points of the survey have led us to question the credit of this survey. On the other hand, a survey of the World magazine that should have covered the world wide conditions can not justify the local cheeses problems because things may be different even opposite in other places. Therefore, the result of the survey has not promised the assumption that the author's conclusion is based on.

Last but not the least, even if the evidence can support the author's advice to concentrate merely on domestic cheeses, nevertheless, it is not equal to the final targets provided by the author that we can improve profits just by this measure. Supposedly, the domestic cheeses are the most favorite styles among the local consumers, however, it does not rule out the probabilities that still there will be some customers who wish to purchase some imported cheese while they buy the domestic ones. May be they'd like to change their tastes or the imported ones have some characters that the domestic ones lack. For that reason, discontinuing stocking the imported cheese may lead to the decrease of profits, contrary to the author's expectation. Moreover, the author seems to neglect other business elements that will decide the profits' improvement or descend, for only focusing on the products respect. Marketing strategy, the settlement of the price or the service attitude, there are so many other elements that can be very significant to the profits of the stores, without which the stores have little chance to earn larger profits. In short, the author's suggestion seems to be quite hasty to conclude that the best way to improve profits is concentrating on domestic cheeses only.

In general, this argument is built upon two evidence that are groundless to support the author's point, otherwise, even the point itself is far from the author's final promise to improve the profits. Therefore, the author may have to reconsider his suggestion and furthermore, try to investigate the local cheese consuming condition more carefully and objectively.
