As the society has developed in such a quick tempo, more people tend to be pragmatic rather than idealistic to be more compatible to the fast speed of the society. However, it does not mean that an idealistic point of view makes little sense. It does play a vital function in some certain realms.

To begin with, pragmatism is paramount in the firmament of society and politics while idealism usually does not work. It is claimed by Max in his famous masterpiece that society has its own regulations of developing. Once being broken or ignored, the regulations will bring negative impact on the society. Robert Owen is a famous idealist, who is not known for his idealistic views but his failure caused by such views. He bought an area in India and tried to realize the ideal society of joint labor and property. At last, he did not achieve the goal and nearly bankrupt as a result. Any ideas which are ignorant or disobedient to laws of development of society is doomed to failure This point may be more vivid by the illustration of a recent example in China. On the contrary, the financial situation remained stagnant even aggravated until the policy of reforming began to be implemented. Facts and experience prove that only pragmatic views that have bearing on the reality can develop the society and make policies sound and effective.

Nonetheless, idealistic views are not always of little use but to play a fundamental function in the realm of academics. Sometimes, such ideal thoughts are much easier and more convenient than actual practices to be study. Many theories build on the ideal situation first and then be extended to actual ones. An apt example is that the equation of state of ideal gas raised by De Broglie, which assumes that each particle existing in the gas has no volume and does not have interaction with other particles. De Broglie concluded the equation on this ideal hypothesis simplify the real condition greatly. And this equation is extended to apply in factual situation after several amendment. An ideal circumstance excluded some minor factors and help understand the nature concealed behind the phenomenon. Such method of researching ideal condition first and then spreading to pragmatic field is still adopted in nowadays laboratories.

Moreover, ideal thoughts are also indispensable in the field of technology. In most times, these views play a guidance role in the development of technology. As we strive for the ideal views, the technology is pushed forward. For example, the dreaming of sauntering on the moon derived from long time ago. The desire of realizing this beautiful dream, people have taken pains to develop the technology of space flight. Finally, Armstrong made his half step but a human stride on the moon. Idealistic views are not always superceded by simpler, more immediate choice and sometimes act as a beacon to enlighten the way ahead. There is a famous advertising message “How profound we can imagine determines how far we can go ahead which encourages people to keep their dream and their idealistic views.

All in all, in those disciplines that value pragmatic views more, we should take more actual situations into consideration and could not put factual practice aside. In other circumstance, we need idealistic views to usher our front road.
