TOPIC£ºISSUE 144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Does artist instead of critic give society something of lasting value? Grantedly, artists ultimately create works which are possible of lasting value in the human evolutions. However, the author overstates the importance of artists and neglect that critics also play a vital role in an art work.
To begin with, the chief reason why I stress the role of critics in artwork is that critics can present the public what is eternal and universal. In fact, behind every profound work of art, is a set of principals and emotions which artists want to express. For example, Guernica, a masterpiece of Picasso, describes the terror of the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish civil war and reflects the artist's indignation. A symphony of Beethoven contains his optimism and confidence in human action. And critic focuses person on the further meaning of a profound work, rather than on its superficial appearance. In short, critics help the public understand and interpret art.
Simply put, without a real understanding and appreciation of art by critics, certain outstanding and profound work of art may be neglected during a special period. Van Gogh serves as an apt illustration. As a distinguished impressionist, he sold only one of his paintings in his entire career--simply because contemporaries did not know the true value of his work. It indicates the importance of a right critic.
In addition, not only can critic help laypersons appreciate profound art, it also contributes to a better work of art. Since critic can provide feedback for artists and a constructive criticism, if taken by heart, may inspire the artist to create a better work. This is especial important for a young artist who has not formed a particular style and lack the artistic accumulation, while critics may be familiar with certain special artistic area and have particular insights. Then the critic is constructive and likely to be an inspiration for artists who ultimately create lasting value works.
Admittedly, it is artists who play a crucial role in a creation of work of art. After all, true art is the product of an artist's authentic passion, a manifestation of the artist's creative impulse, a creation of the artist’s spirit. And there is no critic who can replace the role of Beethoven as to The Ninth Symphony, of Van Gogh as to Sunflower, and of Picasso as to Guernica. From this point of view, artists create the last value of art.
In sum, without artist's inspiration and passion, a work of art cannot be of lasting value. Without critics, the value of art is difficult to be truly understood and appreciated by the public, and young artist has little opportunity to improve their work. Thus, both artist and critic are important to art. |
