143"Artists should pay little attention to their critics.* Criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist's creativity."
*those who evaluate works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
I tend to agree the thesis that artists should not pay attention to their critics, for the reason that criticism has the inclination to undermine and constrain the artists’ creativity.
What is the most important virtue to an artist? No one can deny the answer—creativity. During the whole professional life of an artist, that enables the descendants to memory the artist are the masterpieces bequeathed. The posterity reads the meaning and beauty –created by the artist--between the depictive lines or words.
The creativity, as a virtue of a real artist, tends to contribute to the artist’s fame. While, the road leading to reputation is usually not smooth, as some people think, for that the value contained in a classical work—always can not be recognized by his contemporaries—is beyond the period of time he lives in. We know that one can not really master a subject until he devotes himself in the process. As for works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc., they tend to be attractive to the common people for their appearance—breathtaking scenario, sound tunes, colorful mien, and so on. They often failed to grasp what the artist actually wants to express, however, they tend to give honor to the artists for the appealing looks of the works of art. Things may go on fluently without any accident, and then comes to the stage that the artists gain the fame. In fact, things often go in a very different way. Since every piece of outstanding works born with the virtue that something in it is not commonly accepted by some of the common people, thereby comes the misfortune. Some of the common will refused to read it, without giving any consideration or appreciation to the artists’ works.
Although being not accepted by some of people, taking into account that the artists might also do what they want to do, one may rejoice over that the situation is not too bad. Because that the artists have just been refused by some of the common people, who are of no important influence in the pubic. However, when comes to the critics, what the situation will be? Since the mere time the critics have put their feet into the field of commentary, the situation of the artists became worse. The critics, those who place themselves on a high level in appreciating the value of works of art, wave their hands about any aspects of the works as criticism, and pronounce any commentary they feel reasonable, tend to constrain the artists’ creativity. For being not the author of the works, they often fail to pick out the truth revealed by the works of art and thus make unwarranted remarks on the works, thereby strengthen the unfriendly public opinions on the works. If the artists under such circumstance care about the outsider voice towards their works, they might be really depressed. They may think, “May be the idea or the method I persevere in those works are wrong.” On the next time beginning to work, they may have to think over on how to satisfy the public’s taste but their own, which results the meaning contained in their works is just a reflection of the public’s impression, without any creative minds should be presented as real artists. In this respect, the artists are nobody but people who mechanically combine pieces of story together, pour pigment on a canvas and do other things alike.
On the contrary, if the artists treasure their energy and portion little of their attention out on those cases irrelevant to their creative process, then things become different. All what they have to take thought of is just how to manifest their views to the society, their feeling about harmony of music, their sense of capturing the beauty of nature, and so on, through their delicately accomplished masterpiece. Although what they want to present might not be appreciated by their contemporaries, the quintessence contained in their works will serve as the main contribution to the glory rendered by their descendants. Take Picasso’s Guernica for example. When this works first created by Picasso, a famous artist acknowledged by the whole world now, his contemporaries, especially the critics, have no favor to it. For every time they were viewing Picasso’s Guernica, they visually sense harsh lines, distorted figures, anguished features, etc. They said that these characteristics forced them to feel distressed. However, a certain period latter, when people picking up the painting again, they found that what Picasso desired to express through the painting was his feeling about the war—the ugly consequences of the war. Thus, people came to know and acknowledge the anguish presented in the painting. In this situation, the people’s feeling is connected to the understanding. They came to appreciate the painting and thus give honor to the author generously.
In conclusion, to the artists who want to hand down something to the next generation through their creative works, it is of great importance not to care about the contemporary criticism. Together with their classics, they will be honored eventually. |
