Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
------正文------
Rituals and ceremonies are components of human cultures. They combine with events, activities, and works and involve in all people's daily life. The statement asserts that without rituals and ceremonies, which help define human cultures, societies and groups of people will have a diminished sense of who they are. Although it is rather hard to imagine a society without birthday parties, wedding ceremonies, national days, traditional festivals, and various regional and religious rituals, it is not difficult to understand that without rituals and ceremonies, people will have problems to control their relationships, responsibilities, beliefs, and living targets properly, which essentially contribute to the sense of who they are.
Though some people may sometimes feel uncomfortable or reluctant to admit that the absence of rituals and ceremonies will lead to such severe results, this situation is a fact that is determined by the characteristics of human cultures and their living styles. History has its natural fate to be forgotten. Similarly, as people always choose to remember what is most important, less important ones are more easily to be ignored. Students tend to consider examinations the most crucial and work hard to remember related knowledge. Doctors try to memorize complex diseases and medicines in order to cure their patients. Economists deal with everyday industry and market evolvement, while politicians have to finish millions of meetings and projects. Modern society is so complex and changeable that few people can act leisurely but comprehensively. Without something to remind people of their relationships, responsibilities, beliefs, and living targets, people will gradually forget, if not all, the sense of themselves, which is not apparently vital to their individual daily life.
Rituals and ceremonies undoubtedly emphasize people's sense of themselves each time. Birthday parties and wedding ceremonies remind people of who they love and who love them, together with the overview of the past time and the expectation of the following days. National days stress the hard work of predecessors and the value of today's happy life. Traditional festivals emphasize the culture, belief, and appreciation of regions, nations, and countries, such as the annual harvest festival in Chengdu, China, which exhibits people's thanks to their fertile homeland, and their pride of their wonderful food culture by displaying thousands of traditional dishes and producing processes. There are also various regional and religious rituals, which are performed seriously and carefully. Besides gods' bless, people try to set their acting standards, which are not easily available in their hustle ordinary life.
In conclusion, rituals and ceremonies, components of human cultures, help people to hold their love, cherish their current life, understand their homeland, and establish their living standards. They contribute to people's sense of who they are, which is likely to be forgotten in people's professional life. |
