Should all nations help support the development of a global university designed to engaged students in the process of solving the world's most persistent problems? The speaker claims so. Generally, the speaker is on the right logical side since a global university can facilitate the communication between different countries in solving pressing social problems. Nevertheless, besides establishing a global university, people have a long way towards solving the persistent social problems.

First of all, a global university bridges the geological distance between people. In such a university, researchers and students from different countries, no matter from US or Indian, can communicate face to face. Though people in different places can also communicate "face to face" through the help of internet online-talk, no one can dispute that daily communication is much better than internet online-talk. In the daily communication, besides language people use other ways to express and search use information such as gestures, appearances, etc. Moreover, daily communication also shortens the psychological distance between people. In a global university, researchers and students from different backgrounds live and research together. They share the happiness and sorrow both in life and in researches. In these processes, people establish valuable friendship and mutually believe in and depend upon each other. The affinity between people does not only support people come over the obstacle they meet but also help them to keep open minded to freely exchange new discoveries. Imagine a research community in which partners keep their own secrecies and reluctant to communicate, it is hard to expect such a community will bring any significant advancement since these persistent social problems are too complex for individual to solve by himself along.

However, considering the origins of these persistent social problems, we can not expect the power of such global university can solve them all. Reasons for social problems are various, like human nature--aggression, greed, conflicting rights, misunderstanding, etc. Researches in university may provide suggestions for solving some of them, like the genomic engineering may help to eliminate the undesirable gene of human, otherwise, more expertise of diplomats, social reformer, educationalists, politicians are needed. In addition, even presume that researchers in university provide methods to solve social problems fundamentally, the implement of these methods also requires expertise from areas besides academic. In application, it is common to find out the reality contradict with the assumptions set before since the rapid change of social; it is also possible the well intended projection is opposed by populace for their concern for immediate profits. Therefore any belief that academic power can set social problems along only show a naive about the complex inherent nature of social life.

In sum, a global university does help participating countries to solve the persistent social problems for it provides a platform for communication. However, as long as country only relies on the academic power to solve social problems, the only result is to perpetuate the social problems. Since the complicate causes of social problems and the delicate essence of social life, the only way to social problems is to combine forces from various areas, no matter academic or political.
