I fundamentally agree with the author that it is artist who gives society lasting value. However, in my point of view, the author ignores the important role critics has played in the history of art, which flies in the superficial of this matter.

To begin with, examples abound in the area of art to illustrate the artists' lasting value to society. Through reading the novel Gone with the Wind we see the lively picture of the American civil war. Through watching the Last Supper by Da Vinci, we understand the religious belief in many western countries. Through listening to the great opera Cat we get the beautiful experience of the charming melodrama. Without the artists producing the works first, there will be material on which the critics comment, let alone the lasting value.

However, emphasizing the role of artists does not equal to depreciate critic absolutely. Proper critic towards a product of art not only helps us understand this masterpiece better and attaining the access to the art by interpreting it but also discover the value lies in art. Take the famous Chinese novel <The story of the stone> for example. When I read this novel for the first time, I hardly know anything more than a love story between the two dramatis personae. After reading some critic of this book, I gradually understand the vicissitude of the big feudal family Jia, the rebelled characteristic toward the feudal society of the leading actor.

Moreover, the purpose we contact with art is not to understanding the every aspects of every masterpiece of the whole artists, which is also beyond our capabilities too. The critics give us a easier access to art while to understand what we prefer depend on our own experience and ideas based on our own knowledge. At the same time, as investigator of art and ordinance, critics constitute the art market in modern society as one necessary part besides the artists themselves. Take the film industry in American today for example. Once a film is produced, the critics channel off the audience to the worthy films without wasting their time on some of the bad films in thousands of films existing in the world today.

Admittedly, due to the critics cannot understand the artist absolutely with the limitation such as time and experience, the critics may possibly misunderstand the purpose or the thought of the artist, which disserve the transmitting of the art in a opposite way. Such as, some contemporary critics consider the excellent masterpiece Guernica as violent and bloody. Until recently, we find out the value lies in the works of Van Gogh, which is not admitted by the critics during his time. However, we should not deny all of the positive function of critics.

To the sum, although it is artists who bring the lasting value to society, it is critics who discover the very value of the masterpiece and introducing them to ordinary people.
