Is it artist or the critic, who gives society something of lasting value? I strongly agree with the speaker that it is artist, who creates great art work, endows society something of lasting value. Although critic can help introduce the art to public, more often than not, do little or even disservice to art and society.

It is the artists, who express and explore the world through their imagination and representation, adds dimension and richness to human life. Firstly and fundamentally, artists present life with beauty and pleasure with their art works. Paintings offer us the delightfulness of enjoying the arraignment of color and lines, films and fictions provides us sheer entertainment with the humorous statement, music make us relax after an exhausting day. Moreover, with artists’ critical and insightful perspective, every profound of art, proposes a set of principles about humanity that always prevails. The independence of Jane Eyre, the ingenuousness of Forrest Gump, the endurance reflecting in Beethoven’s symphony, all--transcending times and cultural boundaries- -give people instruction and inspiration through complexities and difficulties of life. Most importantly, through art of work, artists propose and disclose the features and problems of their contemporary society, which provides a valuable mirror for future generations to gaze into the history, sometimes even catalyze a radical social change. For example, through reading the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, people comes a better comprehension of the brutal slavery system dominant in America in the nineteenth century, and it is this novel that aroused social awareness and greatly facilitate the start of American Civil War. In a word, artists instill spirit and humanity to society, without which we are no different from other creatures in essence.

On the contrary, critics actually offer very little to the society, even under some circumstances, undermine the value artist convey to society. Someone may argue that critics help people better understand the art work with their professional comprehension. However, if any art can be evaluated by an objective standard of its techniques, and better understood by populace through one person’ interpretation, I would doubt if it can be regarded as “art” any more. One hundred readers have one hundred interpretations of Hamlet, the unfailing charming of Mona Lisa lies in that the mysterious smile delivery different meaning to different people. To sum up, artist, with their imagination, inspiration, innovation, creates numerous masterpieces that sharp and enrich civilization, without which, the world is left nothing but a cold, non-spiritual crust. Critics, born along with artists, although boost art development to some extent; actually offer little meritorious to the society. In the final analysis, it is artist, not the critic, provides society something of lasting value.
