Economic success, by definition, mostly indicates fulfill of profit maximization, which argued by some Westerners, is the highest moral standard of entrepreneurs. Yet whether economic success can be achieved through individuality or conformity should be viewed from several aspects, which is discussed as following.
Conformity, which includes cooperation and communication and aimed at sharing information and reaching consensus towards certain issue, has propelled, even in some cases determined individual economic success. As our knowledge accumulated and technology evolved, many a work rely on effort of a group of people which, due to its relatively complex nature and intricate mechanism, can not be handed to certain individual no matter how profound his knowledge or how extensive his experience. An apt case involves the manufacturing of CMOS chip. As the essence of computer which functioned as the indispensable information distributor and communication accelerator, CMOS chip's processing necessitates accurate, locked-in fixation and productive, effective approach that can not be achieved through individual effort.
Also perfectly illustrating the concentrated effort to contribute to economic success is the assembly of Boyin 747 which is labeled as passenger plane with the largest capacity and capable of the longest journey from its origination in 1969. It is said that the approximately 4 million accessories were respectively manufactured by 1'500 large corporations and 15'000 comparatively small ones in 65 countries. Another case in point is the manufacture of cars of Ford, whose parts are produced in Malaysia, assembled to engines in Japan, transported to America to complete and returned to Japan for sale. This globalized producing network of multinational corporations significantly reduced cost--explore the comparatively cheap labors in developing countries, enhanced quality--each company orientated at producing particular part and avoid divulge of producing method.
However, individual economic success boost social spirit which would beget groups of ambitious young men and women striving to realizing individually value while facilitate financial progress of society. Aggressively dropped out from Harvard University in his junior year, Bill Gates has become the paradigm of individual economic success. Provoked interest in computer in school serves his career afterwards perfectly, he is now the chief executive and manager of Microsoft which dominates computer manufacturing, the emerging lucrative industry, and he has become the richest man in the world. However, granting his raw intelligence and eager interest in computer, his eminent success is only offspring of historical trend and chances, and could be relegated to the fortunate few which the ordinary entrepreneur could hardly emulate.
In an era of rigorous technology progress and ever complex innovations, conformity plays an ever significant role in multinational manufacturing which is the main approach of mass production today, yet individuality, which might contribute greatly to economic success in the past, is now somewhat obsolete, as the author indicated. |
