TOPIC: ISSUE59 - "Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
WORDS: 667 TIME: 上午 12:45:00 DATE: 2006-7-15
Do we pay too much attention to the role models in the development of children? In here, the speaker’s answer is certain, and thus he suggests that we should switch to the path of emphasizing the development of individual independence in thought and action. As for me, insofar as the great effects of role models in shaping and changing one's characters and personalities, I would like to argue the opposite claim that we can never emphasize too much the importance of role models in the process of growing, which does not necessarily contradict with cultivating individual independence of thought and action.
To begin with, I would like to remind the public that the role models actually play an essential role in the development of one person. Once a person is regarded as a role model, he or she must have some extraordinary aspects entrenched in his or her personal characters or personalities, which can be set as a sample to be imitated by future generations. Consider the great American engineer, John F Stevens, who managed the construction of Panama Canal, is model of many Americans. During the building of Panama Canal, he had overcome a great deal of difficulties to accomplish this wonderful construction, which is called as the eighth miracle in the world. Never to give up is the most outstanding respect of his characters, which inspires many people try to get over difficult in life. Furthermore, most celebrities in the course of history also have their own models, unlike what speaker argues, this kind of faith did not impede their development, rather, guide them to the gateway to the success.
In the second place, we can never emphasize the importance of role models in the development of one person too much. During the process of the growth of every child, teachers and parents serve as the direct role models to them. As for the role of teacher, a study reveals that the quality of a teacher, especially in the primary school, can have great effects in children’s latter development. Admittedly, a good teacher can make a difference in children future lives. Similarly, the role of parents is as important as teachers, sometimes even outweigh. They are the first and ever-lasting models in children's lives. No one will argue seriously that if the parents do not play the role as a good example, their children may probably copy the adults' bad behaviors as well, especially considering that children would not have ability to distinguish right and wrong, bad and good. We can imagine that in a family, that father is used to smoking, and in another family, which father not. Guess which family's child is more likely to get into the habit of smoking when he grows up? There is no doubt that each of us may claim that the child in the family whose father is smoking has a better chance to become a smoker. After all, we should continue to concentrate in the role models during the time when children are growing up old. According to the current situation, juvenile delinquency rates suffer from an increasingly rapid rise, we need the role models now more than ever
Finally, there is not contradiction between the emphasis on impacts of role models and people learning to think and act independently. What we should learn from role models is their characters and personalities, rather copy their behaviors. We should let them serve as the sample to our behaviors and thought, as a result, our personalities and characters can be practiced or honed. What is more, the independence in thinking and acting is also one of the most important characters we should learn from models. The history offers a continuing story about the independence of the celebrity in thinking and acting, without which, artist cannot create innovative works of art, scientist cannot produce inventions.
In sum, from what has been discussed above, we may safely come to the conclusion that we should remain to lay emphasis on the role of models. Maybe, everyone should have his or her own model, guiding the development in the future. |
