In this issue the speaker points out that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries. As far as I am concerned, I partly agree with this assertion, for the reason that, though it is true that the descendants may make more insight decision about the greatness of individuals, there are exceptions.
As a matter of fact, especially in the realm of science, the intelligence of the great scientists often surpassed the cognition of the common people as their contemporaries. A case in point is that when the theory of relativity is discovered by Einstein, it is said that only three and half persons in the world could understand his theory at that time. And as a result, this theory, regarded as one of the two greatest discoveries in twentieth century by those who live after him, did not even win Einstein the Nobel Price then. Similarly, Van Gogh, one of the most famous artists in the history, whose works are priceless nowadays, was straggling in poverty all his life time, for an ironic reason that his contemporaries considered his works dull. How could we depend on those who do not even understand the greatness of the scientist or artist to evaluate their greatness?
Sometimes, the greatness of individuals is not so evident for the time being and it needs time to prove it excellent.(也许是我的语感问题,这句话我总觉得有转折的意思,前面用一个表并列的连词会好一些,比如meanwhile,我词汇有限,可能这个也不是很合适,自己想一个吧) Take Walt, the inventor of the train, as an example, when he was trying to use the stream engine to pull a trail of carts made of steal, people just laughed at his eccentric mind. Though now we have the knowledge that the train is the prime means of transportation which enable the industry revolution to burgeon, because of its astonishing speed compared with its peers, at that time the first train was even slower than the coaches pulled by horses without mentioning it was subject to accidents. So at that time it did be somewhat ridiculous to see a man devote himself to research unwieldy steel carts which could not even compete with the most common means of transportation coaches. Form this point of view, those who live after the great individuals process enough time to test their greatness and then give more reasonable comments on it.
However, not all the greatness of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries, (从你最后一段的逻辑推断,这里是不是应该用can not bedecided啊?但是这样的表述很别扭,反而不如直接用一个肯定句来说吧)in retrospect of the history. For example, Newton was regarded as one of the famous scientists in physics for the discovering the three basic principles of motion even at his time. Another example in case is that Mozart was invited to the play for the imperial family at the age of twelve. We can draw the conclusion from these examples that the people have the ability to decide the greatness of their contemporaries.
To sum up, there are difficulties for people to evaluate the greatness of their contemporaries, but not all the greatness of their contemporaries cannot be decided at their times.
语言上我什么都没改,copy到WORD 里竟然一条波浪线都没有.而且用词也比较华丽些.不过几个TS写的好象有问题,于是感觉文章逻辑上有点不清楚.我大概改了一下.----愚见
