issue144 这是我第一篇限时写的,希望各位多多给予意见,谢谢啦
"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
In this issue, the speaker concerns that artists give society something of eternal value while critics do not. I agree with the claim basically. Critics are people who evaluate works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. Although their work has a big influence on artists, after all, only artists' work can give us valuable things which are ever-lasting.
I concede as time goes by, the function of the critics has become more and more notable. When we surf on the Internet or open a fashion magazine, kinds of comments on various arts rush to us. From the critics, we know the latest movies, the newly-publishing books, and the concerts or exhibitions being held now. In fact, the critics has always had some leading functions to the public for criticism have some knowledge or experiences and are capable to give such an opinion. Without any doubt, some comments are not very object and may be harmful to some artists' work. For example, when Picasso exhibited his first work, he was criticized fiercely by the observers because they can not understand his crazy idea which was much different from the impressionism. However, there are also some critics which point out the real disadvantage of the artists are so accurate and useful that it is wiser for the criticized to accept. Anyhow, we must admit that critics have contributed much to the arts.
Yet, still their important function can not cover the splendid rays of light elicited by the artists. Now matter how wonderful and correct the comments are, it is the art which gives us appreciation and aesthetic feeling. Painters record the image of the rich and colorful world full of fantasy and imaginations; novelists tell us innumerable moving stories which reflect the humanity; song writers blow a breeze of the sound of human being's ideas deeply into our ears; directors of films let the vivid memories existed in our head out of mind and deduct in front of our eyes. How beautiful and brilliant the art is! Usually the artists' work concentrates many of our knowledge, our virtue, our views and our feelings. All of these are precious fortunes of human civilization and are immutable. As a result, I agree with the asserter.
There are lots of examples supporting the view. Van Gogh, whose life is shining as the starry night, were not accepted by the society he lived. He had not sold even one of his works. But he didn't mind the comment and persisted on his style. His work reflects the selfhood, and has a prominent effect on impressionism. He left us an everlasting miracle not the critics to him. When Deburssy first played his impressionistic music they were controversial at the time. But now, the abstract and meaningful piano rhythm like "moonlight" is recorded on discs and will be listened generation by generation while those comments may have been forgotten.
In sum, although critics play an important role, the artists are still the leading actors. Whatever the comments are, they are formed based on the art work and are serving the art. It is the artists' work which has always been changing the world. Our lives become meaningful because of it, our happiness and sadness can be shared because of it, our intelligence can be descended because of it. They are permanent. |
