Though the power of the populace is enormous, as we know, hardly any evidence can be found in history textbooks, which is full of the names of hero or heroine and their heroic deeds. Maybe the emphasis of the history should shift from the famous few to the endeavor of the multitude.

It is too familiar for us to associate the name of one or two individuals with a history even during studying history. The leader are always famous than his soldiers and even for the military counselors, who to some extent determine the result of the war, their name can only be found at the footnote of the history textbooks.  A case in point is that, it is not difficult to find the mane of Lincoln together with his admirable deeds in the wars in any history textbooks which include the Civil War of America, leaving those soldiers who devoted their sweat, blood and even life to the liberation of the slaveries unmentioned. Lincoln is a great man of great personality and there is nothing wrong for us to admire such a person, while it might seem a little unfair for the textbooks of history, as one of the main means to study history, attribute all the full credit in the Civil War and the liberation of the slaveries to the only leader, no matter how much he did in this war. An even more common situation is that, there are much more researches done in the field of history about the famous several than the populace as a whole at that time.

In fact, during the process of history, populace are always the authentic heroes instead of several individuals and it is the populace other than famous few pull the society to develop. Still take the America Civil War as an example, if all the people in the society at that time were contend with the existence of slaveries there would be no disagreement between the north and south part of the America, and if those multitude paid no attention to whether the America should be divided into two parts or maintained as a whole, the Civil War may not necessarily happen. What's more, if the Lincoln’s opinions on leading were not supported by most of the America people, he might even not be the present of America no mentioning leading the Civil War and becoming a hero in the history. In a word, it is the American people's will to set out such Civil War and manumit those in slavery, which can not be changed by a few in the congress or the present Lincoln. Similarly, without the brave and loyalty of the soldiers from the north of America and the brain trust, it might be impossible for Lincoln to win such difficult war all by himself.

Admittedly, those famous few played important roles in the history events they might be leaders or instructors who directed the people to achieve their wills through correct way and at last fulfill the wish of the masses. Sometimes they stood in the frontage of eras and had an acute insight of the history trend and then propagate their notions to multitude leading them to realize their present conditions and the way should be taken to the bright future. For example, Lincoln might be one of those who first realize the destruction of slavery and he disseminate his idea to the whole society and director those who wish to change the present conditions through the way of Civil War to achieve their will. That is the greatness of Lincoln as a hero of American in the history.

To sum up, great few are worth fame and respect, while the significance of the masses should not be ignored in the study of history.
