issue41   Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.


Nonmainstream areas do have some influence on society by satisfying human needs addressed little by mainstream science, especially hundreds of years ago, when scientific exploration is less developed. However, nowadays its influence as vital as the speaker contends, even the form of its appearance, sometimes, is combined with mainstream science.

From history, we can easily find the tracks in which unscientific inquiry condoles human beings, when lots of nature phenomenon cannot be interpreted by their superficial cognition of the world. For example, they consider that an eclipse of the sun foretells a disaster, and a wish will come true when a meteor across the sky. Such a case can be explained by two aspects. The first is the conception of everything has its cause and effect. For all we know, the basic human behavior different from lower animals is the high-grade thinking ability. When our ancestors encounter a huge disaster or disease, but they do not know why, they think some underlying reasons lurk here. Thus, they struggled to find the reasons. The other aspect is that human being is innate with curiosity. Consequently, we, as well as our ancestors are always interested in the unclear things which believed containing mysterious power. So, when two confusing phenomena appeared together, people are inclined to the notion that they have causal sequence. Since there are no better compelling evidence, some kinds of inquiries is established, which, at least, will give people some proposals about today and tomorrow, no matter beneficial or detrimental.

As more and more mysterious phenomena are interpreted by the reasoned scientific analysis, the majority people discard the old traditional method. Besides, in some countries, such as China, governments, which excessively believe science, identify such inquiry as a wicked form to enchant popularity and weaken their systemic governing, and need to ban it. For that matter, it is the science that reduces the influence of such kind of inquiry gradually.

However, from another standpoint, it is also the science which brings unscientific inquiry another spring. The rapid development of science leads to social work efficiency, which ensues to generate drastic competition, and therefore make people encounter high working pressure. At this time, people return to unscientific inquiry to condole their soles. Meanwhile, another method that contributes to the nonmainstream areas of inquiry is the developed scientific technologies. For example, some new fortune-telling method combining with scientific theory and using internet as its vehicle is very crafty. Also, the magical figures produced by modern visual technologies can easily persuade the young, who lacks rational cognition, to believe fortune-telling and astrology and to pursue unscientific inquiry. But when the young grow up and have well-balanced minds on the world, the situation goes to opposite.

Overall, such nonmainstream areas of inquiry actually have their own way to influence society, but are far from a vital role.  And the science and unscientific inquiry will conflict and mutually benefit paradoxically for a long time.
