As we are in the so-called information age, the knowledge is ever increasing day by day. Someone may claim that the reading, which takes too much time, is inferior for learning compared to television (TV); however, I insist that reading books will never be out of date, and the TV can only be used for entertainment or information instead of learning.

As it is easily seen, the TV can provide images and sounds simultaneously, which greatly reduces the burden of the viewers. Consequently, the viewers need not to think deeply when watching TV, and what they need to do is to follow the TV program. If a man is getting used to this way of getting information, they will probably lazy in the mind and not think independently. In so far as the learning process, it is involved in the active thinking and questioning, from which we can easily conclude that the TV is not suitable for learning.

Although the TV is not efficient for learning, it has advantages over the books. It is used mainly for the entertainment and information. For the entertainment, an adult can watch the TV series, while a child may prefer an animation; they both can obtain satisfaction from the TV program. Indeed, the TV can help people be relieved from the burdens of a day and make them more relax. As for the information, there are so many news reports on TV that you can be informed by the latest news from all over the world. For instance, Iraq launched an attack upon the Lebanon, the president will attend the eight country, and the South Korea tested a new kind of missile. The TV sets are full of all those information, making the world small like a village. On the contrary, the book can not serve for this purpose, for if we want to know all the above information, we may need to read a huge number of books which is almost impossible.

The most efficient way for learning is through the books. The books are the reflections of the author's thoughts, and the reader need to contemplate on the book in order to completely comprehend the author's idea. Along with the process of active thinking and questioning, the reader can get more and more involved; consequently, the learning result will be more effective. Due to the active thinking process, the reader can formulate his own opinion as well and probably the knowledge he absorbs from the book will benefit him all his life. Moreover, during reading the book, the reader is making a conversation with the author, which can greatly enhance his scope and vision. Thus we can really learn much by reading books.

In the final analysis, the TV may serve better than books as a means of entertainment and information, and reading books maybe the most efficient way for learning. Due to high pace of modern society, most people turn to the TV rather than books since they do not have enough time. Many of them like such a way of learning, but they do not realize that they are deprived of the ability to learn. I personally hope that more and more people can turn back to books.
