Determine whether a leader is effective or not should be weighed in many aspects according to different respective views of different people. The author’s statement is that a basic quality that a effective leader should have is to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. However, it oversimplifies this issue. The final judgment, in my point of view, should depend on a case by case analysis.
When discussing the effective level of a leader, the first and foremost factor that should be considered in is the ability of leader. The level of mastering the ability of working primarily determines how effective the leader is. For one thing, the efficiency, speed, quality of one’s work may probably be related to the status of the operator, either in a corporation or in nation. No one can deny the fact that one’s status is in response to his efficiency and work ability. For another, a high ability indirectly reveals an unshakable fact that one is smart and decisive in a certain extent, or else the work’s quality would be affected. Moreover, whether an official maintains the ethical and moral standards is not chiefly in response to one’s effectiveness. History is replete with examples to demonstrate this point. Bill Clinton, one of the presidents of U.S., notwithstanding has been stigmatized due to his sexual scandal, his ability of dealing with national affairs and his artistic way of speaking has never been weakened.
As a contrast, people who have no capability in working may be ignored or even disdained, no matter how strictly they obey to the standards of ethical and moral. When facing troubles, these people could often alight into such a dilemma of hesitation that no one is eager for relying on them, themselves included. They have nothing to say with a leader as a consequence.
However, standards of ethical and moral can still play a role in the effectiveness, though not a key role. An effective leader is some one who gathers both work capability and moral perfection into a whole part. Paragon, such as the Chinese prime minister Zhou Enlai, respectively come immediately to my mind. He earned worship from not only Chinese population but the people who long for peace and fairness all over the world because of his perfect personality and his capability. That is a notable illustration of the point.
Judging from all the evidence above, an unshakable conclusion is made that a leader who is effective does not have to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. On the other side, the absence of ethical and moral standards would be unacceptable.
