To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.

Nowadays, in a democratic and liberal society, a high-ranking personal quality has become the premise of being a political leader. To my point of view, it is necessary for the person in high position of authority to maintain a high moral standard, though to some people, this demand may be fastidious and unnecessary.

In nowadays society, to be elected as the political leader, you have to gain support and populace from the public. And the most important factor that may determine the public’s judgment may not be your talent and ability of governing but rather your honest and sincerity. In other words, it is your sublime moral character that may move your constituents and motivate them to endow you the position as the leader and representative of them. Therefore, to be a political leader, high-ranking moral character may functions as the foremost thing. It is hard to imagine how a person with humble moral standards could become a leader of a group of civilized and well-educated people. For no one but the villains themselves would like to trust such a notorious person and select him to be their leader.

Secondly, although talents and achievement are important for a political leader, without a high moral standard, this talents and prominence could also be diverted to lead a disaster of the society, even the entire earth’s population. In the example of the Hitler, we may find out how terrible the consequence will be when a maniac is really in power. Although I still have no idea of how such a notorious person could become the leader of Germany after the World War 1, his latter outrageous behaviors during the World War 2 such as the          has best illustrated my notion that a politician with poor moral standard with cause a disaster.

Additionally, although it sounds a little fastidious to ask political leaders to maintain the highest moral standard, considering the important role and profound influence of the leaders to the whole society’s fecility and prosperity, such a former captious demand may become necessary. The admirable titles of the politicians mean nothing but the great responsibility as the representative of the entire populace. Everything you do may under the supervision of millions of people, everything decision you make have to satisfy the expectation and desire of the public. In addition, a politician has to resist the allure and inducement the great power handled by them. In this respect, they have to restrain the dark side of human instincts such as greedy and lust which is irresistible for a person without noble moral character and strong will.  

In conclusion, to be a politician has ever been a hard work, partly because of the high requirement on outstanding talent and ability, partly and more importantly because of the supreme demand for a high-ranking moral standard. In a word, to be politician, you have to be noble first.
