  Is the chief benefit of the study of history, as the speaker asserts, to break down the illusion that people in different periods of time of history are significantly different? I concede that we would gain many benefits from the fact that, people in different periods share some characteristics to some extent in essence; however, further reflection show that we can gain equally significant benefits from the differences of the people in different periods of time; beyond these two chief benefits, in addition, we can learn more from the study of history.

  The study of history does provide us with evidences that people in different periods of history time share some essential similarities in essence, such as the basic desires and instincts. Based on this fact, the history serves as a mirror form which we can make enlightened reflection of our human- beings, that is, history is referred to be the precaution and precedent for the later to efficiently avoid any similar mistakes which may occur in any period of time as well as to make great progress on the shoulder of the former. For one compelling example, when the all human’s desire for peace and resisting for wars is discovered, by the researchers of the history, the government leaders’ obligation is to solve the international conflicts by effective measures, such as negotiation, diplomacy or finance rather than the military ways to win the global peace in politics, economics and the military as well as the overwhelming supporting from his/her citizens. In short, the similarities we have learned in different periods erect a mirror for the later to reflect our foibles as well as advantages.

  It is equally beneficial, in my view, to study the differences of people in different periods of history. Admittedly, the basic desire and instinct is unchanging in the development of the history, however, the mores, customs and the value of different societies are showing their unique characteristics as a result of the culture collision between different history periods. For one supporting example, the gender inequality appearing in any period of history, yet people’s attitude towards it is not the same. Different culture background formed different life values to judge the social position of women. All these differences provides us with break through which we can have a perspective of the evolution of the whole human-beings.  
  Beyond the two benefits discussed above, more other beneficial facts can be learned from the study of history, such as the inspiration from the celebrities. One needs look no further than one household hero, Churchill, who once said that “never, never, give up” which inspire even today’s human-beings to have increasing courage to conquer any impediment blocking the path to success as well as his contemporary people. In this aspect, history has erected a example for present humans to strike endless inspiration from the elites who made notable contribution in the history.

  To sum up, I to some extent agree with the speaker that the study of history provides us with many benefits from the sharing similarities of people in different history periods. In my view, however, equally significant benefits will gain from the differences of people in different periods. What is more, we can strike an inspiration from the history examples so as to devote more contribution to our contemporary society.
