TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."



观点：研究历史不仅仅与我们的日常生活息息相关，它与一个社会，一个民族乃至于整个世界的发展都有这密切的关系。

对于个人：1.读历史可以使人分辨好坏，善恶，可以使人变得wise。英雄的历史教会我们正义，勇敢，拼搏，形成我们评价一个人的criterion
          2. 读历史可以增进现代人对事物的理解。比如去博物馆参观，或是罗马古斗场。

对于社会：研究社会形成，发展以及变化的历史，有助于促进社会moral sense的发展；可以发掘一些社会问题的历史渊源，或者从历史中得到一些借鉴，从而有助于解决一些社会问题，从而有助于社会和谐。

对于民族： 学习和研究光荣的民族史有助于培养民族自豪感（如英国），形成良好的民族性格。 学习民族的屈辱史可以使当代人牢记历史教训，促使其发奋图强，有利于民族的崛起和壮大(如:中国学习近现代史）

对于整个世界： 有利于促进世界和平。学习世界历史，可以了解世界各民族是如何发展过来的，以及各民族的特点还有他们之间的相互关系如何；比如，学习中东各民族的历史，有助于解决巴以问题（虽然也许不能完全解决）；学习其他民族的历史，可以促进各个民族之间的理解，共识，从而促进世界各个民族的communication。




Why do we study history? And what for? Such disputable questions have raised a hot debate among all walks of life.  Some asserted that the value of studying history lies only in its relation to our daily lives. But here, I just want to add that it means much more than that: it is closely related with the development of a society, a nation, or even the whole world.

Studying history can make an individual wise. From reading history, one could better tell what is right from what is wrong, what is good from what is bad, what is kind from what is evil. For instance, it is in the stories of heroes that we understand what is justice, what is brave, and what is the way to glory; and at the same time, it is in the stories of all human beings that we formed gradually the criterion to assess every social members.

As what I have vindicated, the study of history is indeed relevant to our daily lives. However, it would be an extreme idea to narrow its value to none but its influence to our daily life.

As far as a society is concerned, studying history contributes to social harmony. Our society, from its birth to change and developing and then to exuberance, has experienced a long process.  Therefore, through the study of this process, we can have a better understanding of the historical roots of some complicated social issues, so that we could probably find better solutions to them.


Besides, the study of history is of great significance to a nation. It helps to establish special national characteristics as well as to cultivate its people to be proud of their nation. Nordic, for example, has, for centuries, been awarded by its people as the most outstanding nation in the world. That is because Nordics has a full understanding of the history of their nation. They knew much about the glory past of their heroes and forefathers. Just putting aside whether Nordic could rank first among all nations in the world, we have every reason to say that Nordic could be the most brave nation in the world. Just go to the history book, and you will find how brave the Nordics are in the battlefield.

Last but not the least, the study of history add bricks to the communication of the world, and can therefore maintain the world peace. History teaches us the features of various nations of the world, and thus helps understanding the relationships with each other. In this way, we can promote the mutual understanding and enhance the common ground between various nations. Among the illustrations of the truths that might be cited, the issue of the Middle East could be a good example. The Middle East issue has profound and perplex historical reasons; therefore, the only possible solution to the issue might be disinter its roots from history. And fortunately, with the communication of counterparts in the Middle East, this issue has made great progress. In a word, the study of history can and will promote the world peace.

In conclusion, studying history is closely related with not only our daily life, but also every society, every nation and the whole world. For this reason, every individual should be exposed to history, because with it, we are going to make a better, better world.
