Argument45The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal.
"Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea."

The argument above presents a sound case for arguing that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea. Based on reports from local hunters and coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, the arguer made a direct conclusion .However, our conclusion can not be complete without tacking a more critical and thorough survey of the work of the convention, without examining it on all sides, and comparing it in all its parts.
First of all, I would examine the authenticity of the reports from local hunters. Firstly, the arguer fails to take into account other relevant factors that might result in the decline in arctic deer population. The decline in arctic deer population may due to the extinction of their plant foods. The change of the climate affects the growth of plant in this area and the extreme conditions at this time may leads to the decline of these plant foot of deer. Second, the reports from the hunters should be doubt by us because they may think the present number of arctic deer can not satisfy their hunting need. Maybe the number is just declined a little but their relative hunting need is rising increasingly. Also, the decline in arctic deer populations maybe the result of their excessive hunting. A great number of deer was hunted and killed, and the young generations are not propagated enough. so it perhaps a main factor of the decline. Other factors as the disease and nasty climate conditions may lead to the decrease of deer.
In the second place, the arguer fails to rule out the possibility that the arctic deer could still travel over ice to neighboring islands. First, we can not get the information that how many deer the hunter’s reports including and how much area them covered. Maybe it is just a small part of deer population the reports concerned and it surely does not mean the whole population’s circumstances. So we should not deny that other population of deer may migrate across the frozen sea successfully. Second, the fact that these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt is not credible. As the global warming may not affect this area and the sea ice did not melt seriously, we can predict that deer may migrate across the frozen sea and get their food.
Overall, the reasoning behind the conclusion that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea seems logical. But we should evaluate all possible alternatives and causes for the decrease of deer. So it is obvious that this argument is not thoroughly well-reasoned.
