Nowhere is the modern thinking over the question of whether in most of human endeavors the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Many argue it is, saying that pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, while idealistic views are often to be superceded. As for me, I concede that pragmatic view is of course crucial to survival, however, the role of ideal cannot be ignored.

To begin with, taking a pragmatic view, we humans indeed make a difference in today's society. Guided by the view of pragmatic, people tend to facilitate our society and lives more than ever before. In the field of agriculture, scientists tend to breed the crop which is more productive and nutrient, making more and more counties end hunger. In the field of economy, every merchant makes efforts to maximize profits produced per hour. In the field of politics, the leaders try their best to make possible torrid economical growth while maintaining the social order. After all, from these illustrations come the conclusion that the only time a society can achieve immediate success is when the people focus on practicality, then make efforts to realize it. In short, It is just the pragmatic view to guide our society to become more productive and convenient than any time in the past.

However, too much of any one thing can be problematic. While pragmatic view plays a pivotal role in the development of society, at the same time, we should be cautious that too pragmatic a view is may also render people to merely focus on short-term profit, while ignoring long-term impacts. Simpler and more immediate options might exert positive effects around the corner, yet, we do not need to go further to evaluate the negative effects that come along with it in the near future. For example, in an attempt to gain more profits, business men would be blind to potential pollution that producing a certain item might cause. Or consider that peasants, in order to improve crop yields, abusively use pesticide. Although the productivity improved, more egregious problems may occur as well, such as harming more innocent animals and contaminating water, and subsequently destroy the intricate matrix of animal kingdom. Thus, there is good sense that when determining the final plan, we should not only concentrate on the pragmatic to much, but also pay attention to the further result certain behaviors might bring about.

While we should take a problematic view to solve the problems, we should not lose sight of the function of ideal which is of significance and profundity in achieving goals. There is no substitute of an ideal which can bring encourage and inspiration, and which can become a goal to motivate man to work hard, make efforts to realize it. Without the ideal that one day people can fly in the sky like a bird that people would not think out the idea to plan and build a plane. Or, consider the accomplishment of Panama Canal, hundreds of years, people dream of linking Pacific and Atlantic Oceans across the neck land of connecting North and South America, a dream that enables American engineer John F Stevens to square no effort to lead worker to make the dream come true. In short, the ideal gives people goal to pursue, along with the pragmatic view, people take proper steps to realize ideals some day in the future.

In sum, from what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that while pragmatic view is of course to make our society to progress, we should not lose sight of the fact that idealistic view can serve to plan great goal in history.
