TOPIC: ISSUE26 - "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."
WORDS: 596          TIME: 0:44:21          DATE: 2006-8-16

Throughout history, people are always emphasizing the importance of preserving historical relics and obviously valuable buildings included. These old buildings are precious enough to be maintained and no other modern development could replace them on the long run.

As we know, the primary goal of investigating into history is to find a proper position of us in history and also to provide us with certain personal and national identities. These identities are mainly gained through study their building style of respective cultures. More importantly, these old buildings might be the best materials to study since other relics are easy to fade away and difficult to excavate. Our precedents' constructional techniques are preeminent enough to let these buildings stand for years and later people can still live in them, therefore, these buildings are preserved well and kept till today, which offer us invaluable measures. By studying great walls in China, for example, Chinese people become familiar with wars and battles in ancient China and consequently understand their relationships with their neighbours. The great wall still stands there today, to give a trust in their strength to Chinese people and encourage them to move forward and conquer difficulties they face. This goes to show how historical relics, especially old buildings provide personal identities as well as national spirit. It has become an indispensable part of people's life.

Therefore, people nowadays make great efforts to protect the Great Wall from natural and human destroy, and this action should be encouraged and continued regardless of modern development. And so are other old buildings. It is clear that people are unable to fill all the land on earth with construction works in a long time, then, it might be unwise to replace those old ones with newly built buildings. Modern development can be done in other places and still create something new and great. Actually, many cities and counties are doing their work in the right way, as they expand their city and county boundaries and build new buildings outside the center. These newly built factories, schools; supermarkets as well as living department do not only trigger the economy in the skirts and also keep themselves away from destroying old buildings in the inner space. These old buildings can still attract people from all places and give them pleasure and leave us money and historical pride.

Moreover, it is harmful and expensive to destroy the old buildings, as is reported by some constructional firms and governments. Since historical relics are built with old techniques and some parts of them are much more difficult to transport to other places or destroyed. When experts are wondering how those huge boulders are moved together to form the pyramids, workers are worrying about how to remove them. Of course it is a hard work and cost much. Instead of wasting money on demolishing these precious relics, why don't spend these money on preserving them and make the best use of these old buildings?

It is true that as our society are developing fast; new things will conflict with old ones. Not in all cases should we replace the old with the new. After careful consideration, it would be wiser to protect the historical buildings rather than destroy them. When barren lands are not enough to do new development, people then can come back to this issue again and work out a better plan than simply replacement. In the contemporary society when lands are far from rare, we have to keep on protecting historical relics, not only for ourselves but for our children and their futures.

Throughout history, people are always emphasizing the importance/significance改用高级词汇比较好 of preserving historical relics and obviously valuable buildings included. These old buildings are precious enough to be maintained and no other modern development could replace them on (用错,"用长远的观点看"应该是in the long run)the long run.

As we know, the primary goal (主要目标)of investigating into history is to find a proper position of us in history and also to (并列部分,可以去掉不用)provide us with certain personal and national identities. These identities are mainly gained through study their building style of respective cultures.(本句说的有点牵强,改为:One way to get these identities is the study of historical buildings.) More importantly, these old buildings might be the best materials to study since other relics are easy to fade away and difficult to excavate.(这个并列用的好!) Our precedents' constructional techniques are preeminent enough to let these buildings stand for years and later people can still live in them, therefore, these buildings are preserved well and kept till today, which offer us invaluable measures.(笔误:treasures) By studying great walls in China, for example, Chinese people become familiar with wars and battles in ancient China and consequently understand their relationships with their neighbours. The great wall still stands there today, to give a trust in their strength to Chinese people and encourage them to move forward and conquer difficulties they face. This goes to show how historical relics, especially old buildings provide personal identities as well as national spirit. It has become an indispensable part of people's life.

Therefore, people nowadays make great efforts to protect the Great Wall from natural and human destroy, and this action should be encouraged and continued regardless of modern development.(转折到了modern development上面,因此微调提纲的顺序,为的是更好的衔接) And so are other old buildings. It is clear that people are unable to fill all the land on earth with construction works in a long time, then, it might be unwise to replace those old ones with newly built buildings. Modern development can be done in other places and still create something new and great. Actually, many cities and counties are doing their work in the right way, as they expand their city and county boundaries/borders and build new buildings outside the center. These newly built factories, schools, supermarkets as well as living department(生造词汇,改为apartment buildings/apartment house) do not only trigger the economy in the skirts(笔误,改为outskirts) and also keep themselves away from destroying old buildings in the inner space. These old buildings can still attract people from all places and give them pleasure and leave us money and historical pride.

Moreover, it is harmful and expensive to destroy the old buildings, as is reported by some constructional firms and governments. Since historical relics are built with old techniques and some parts of them are much more difficult to transport to other places or to be destroyed. When experts are wondering how those huge boulders are (时态,改为were)moved together to form the pyramids, workers are worrying about how to remove them. Of course it is a hard work and cost much. Instead of wasting money on demolishing these precious relics, why don't we spend the money on preserving them and make the best use of these old buildings?

It is true that as our society are developing fast; new things will conflict with old ones. Not in all cases should we replace the old with the new.
