4.应该理想与现实相结合,不要让理想变成空想.


I agree with the speaker insofar as that a practical and pragmatic approach toward our goals would be conducive to succeed in short term, however, during the process of pursuing our target, we should not overlook the importance of idealism for success in any endeavor, no matter in academics, business, and politics.
In the era of high efficiency leading to the promotion of people’s attention on practical efforts. Pragmatic behavior serves as the most important avenue for human being to achieve success. People concentrate on what exists on sight more than the unforeseen future. Examples in the realm of academic, social, business aptly illustrate it. First, when it comes to business arena, manufacturers, facing the scorching competition, gradually realize that pursuing maximum profits at lowest cost should serve as their primary goal. Going with expanding working hour of the employee and decreasing wages, even betraying their interests in competition. Second, in considering the academic world it might be more tempting to get higher grades for students and research papers for the scholars, regardless of obtaining how much knowledge and positive effects their fruition are to bring human being. Third, most politicians seem driven by their interest in being elected and reelected-that is surviving, rather than by any senses of mission, or obligation to their country.

However, ideal is the guidance to real life. Although encountering difficulties on the way to create new life, persistent endeavor toward ideal goal drives people to reap the success in the end. Our society, therefore, becomes democratic, free as well as prosperous. Martin Luther King, Jr., a famous lawyer and leader of the companion of Civil-rights for Black in the United States, became convinced that nonviolent resistance was the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom, determining brought freedom to the black. With an unshakable belief in mind, King ended the system of segregation in the end, although facing many obstacles. After that, the United States becomes a nation of democracy, freedom and prosperity. In addition, it is because of the desire and passion for hovering in the universe of the ancient people facilitates human to discovery the cosmos without stop, human could manage to land on the moon.  

At the time we are sharing the practical and ideal idea, we should combine and balance the two factors in reality. People should endeavor toward their ideal as experiencing the rough reality, and they can avoid short-sight with a long-term ideal in mind. Nevertheless, ideal without pragmatic supports are to become vain finally.

In general, from what has been discussed above, we may find that, with practical view, we can gain pragmatic profit and result on sight and long-term and far-reaching effect on human being with ideal thought in mind. Combination of idealism and pragmatics will make our world better.

I agree with the speaker insofar as pragmatic behavior can help us survive for a short period of time. However, idealistic point of view is crucial to the lasting survival in the realms of scientific research and business.

When it comes to scientific research, students would often use the data, results, models contributed by others rather than work out their own ideas to prepare for the papers. The practical approach saves time and by which people can finish the tasks or pass the examinations more quickly and easily. On the other hand, developing one's own ingenious thoughts through timeless experiments and studies will only delay or even never taste the academic fruits. But, obviously, the practical way could never produce the lasting success if everyone only focuses on the short term success. In the field of microelectronics, for instance, its textbooks often present us with the basic or complicated principles and phenomenon under the optimal or ideal conditions. It is true that the empirical results are limited by the real circumstances which, in turn, demonstrate the ideals are impractical. However, to a person who pursues a better alternative close to the ideal, it is frustrating to reconcile to the reality. The rapid development in this area has clearly shown that many professionals, experts and scholars are not yielding to the limits at all. Although the processor with the advanced techniques like pipelining could theoretically do more tasks than the simple one which could only execute the instruction one at a time, the throughput the new chip could achieve under the real conditions greatly dwarfs in comparison with the ideal conditions. But many scholars never gave up and have conceived all kinds of new techniques and algorithms to close to the ideal value. In general, through the efforts and idealistic spirits of these academicians, the technique obstacles in the scientific researches have been overcome one after another; a more significant and encouraging success is taking over the past feat. This repetitive process never ceases. The idealistic way of exploring has played a profound role in achieving the lasting survival.

We can not deny that the business world deals with the more practical purposes such as the deadlines of production, sales prices, profits margins, and so forth. Everyone who wants to survive in this ferociously competitive and globally connected market have to strike a practical deal to quicken its products' time to market. Who lag behind the prevailing tides will not only get no profits but vanish from the existence. It is true than every year Intel Corporation puts out types of central processing unit (CPU) to the market for different ranges of use. Without such pace, it would lose the battle scrambling for a large share of information technology market in the world. But, looking back on the performance of the little chips, one can discover that the company has the long-term plans and the idealistic vision that permeates among every ranks of officer. If Intel could only produce the chips with the same performance for the past two decades, could the company survive and become the giant?  Certainly not. Without the wisdom, sweat efforts and the idealistic views of its leaders, researchers and experts who aspire to make a chip that is cost-effective and as powerful as the supercomputer, the “microcomputer” would be still a dream. So is the fate of the company with the ambition of monopolizing the market. Every company can probably survive with certain resources or temporary profits, but how long it could survive or remain flourishing is greatly influence by the idealistic thinking of its staff and goals set by the leaders.

In sum, the speaker fails to realize that it is the idealism—vision, dream, and commitment—that keeps the fundamental survival and lasting success. Practical behavior alone, though critical for the short-term success, will only impede the progress of human beings, confining the success in stagnation.
