"Instant foods, instant communication, faster transportation-all of these recent developments are designed to save time. Ironically, though, instead of making more leisure time available, these developments have contributed to a pace of human affairs that is more rushed and more frantic than ever before." 124. 快餐、实时通讯、快递,所有的这些最新发明都是为了节省人们的时间。但具有讽刺意味的是,这些发明非但没有给人们带来更多的闲暇时间,反而让人们的生活节奏越来越快
A. Theoretically speaking, such recent inventions as instant foods, instant communication, and fast transportation have made it possible for us to set aside more time for repose and relaxation.
Actually we are living a more hurried life today than our ancestors centuries ago.
C.instinct:.(主观原因及其历史来由)
D. What makes us hurry today is our values that give too much stress to competition and efficiency.(初衷被社会原因所曲解用以提高竞争的效率,历史来由)
自我评价:太长;本来提纲还行,观点的表达可以很好,但还是冗长,而且感觉也没讲到深度上,点子上。还是要限时。
The idea of technology progress looms so large in the modern world that we can experience it in every corner of our life day by day. On the one hand, with the advance of technology, we could have more time left to do more choices. On the other hand, with more time squeezed out, our minds are stuffed with excess task and documents which making the pace of our life even more rushed and frantic than ever before. So a kind of viewpoint comes out that it is the recent inventions which are torturing us as the speaker claims. However, is it really the advanced technology that leads to the dilemma of our society? Is it really the original intention of these great inventions to push our own into a crazy rushed world?
As the modern inventions were first introduced in our life, the original intention is just to save our time to have more pleasure days with our friends. Just imagine a scenario that you are on a bus talking with a friend on the other side of the earth by cell phone. It would be impossible in the 19th century. With only the postmen or pigeons can be relied on at that time, the delivering would cost days or even months. The convenience introduced by cell phone, Internet, faster transportation makes it possible for us to have more time with our family and friends enjoying the leisure of life.
Ironically, we are living a more hurried life today than our ancestors. We are often lost in the endless video meetings and mountain of documents, sometimes upset by a phone call from boss asking for back work when traveling with our families. So what are the true reasons behind the embarrassment following the modern technology?
Firstly, the most important one lies on the instincts of our own. As our human beings were first appeared on the earth, we were busy working for survival. Without the new gadgets we use today, they had to keep collecting foods for future survival and reproducing since it was not sure that there would be another harvest tomorrow. Here came no mechanisms to stop and say enough. The instinct is so strengthened that it was kept through our history till now. So far, it is still driving us to strive for better living. However, with the improvement of technology, we could acquire more foods easily, communicate with each other conveniently. While it is weakening the necessity to devote most of our life time to endless work, the instinct rooted in our mind is still there affecting our common behavior, just not evolves with the step of technology advance. And that is actually the most significant reason that caused the hurried life nowadays.
Secondly, our value that gives too much stress to competition and efficiency also helps to form a community of fast pace. In the early days, a tribe needed to compete with another one to occupy more land and foods to feed its ever increasing population. Nowadays, the idea to compete for survival is still preserved as a value of society. For example, to maintain an enterprise, the employers have tried all their ways to maximum the efficiency of employees by utilizing modern gadgets in order that they can defeat their opponents in market. We do not need to discuss whether it is right or not here. But if we can use the recent inventions in another way efficiently squeezing excess days to meet with a friend far away recalling the past moment or to travel to the village for a bucolic time, we would have a completely different feeling to life.
To sum up, the original intention of these modern inventions is to save our time to make more leisure time available. The true reason behind the hurried life is not technology advance, but the instinct rooted in our mind inherited from our ancestor and the idea of competition which weighed too heavily in society nowadays. |
