Can the greatness of individuals be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries? There is no absolutely correct answer to this question. In some cases, especially in arts, natural science, the evaluation of the greatness of individuals made by their descendants is more objective than that of contemporaries. While, when it comes to other fields such as sports or business, the greatness is recognizable immediately.
Due to the profundity of their minds exceeding their contemporaries', most brilliant figures tend to be misunderstood and ignored. New theories and ideas which are different from people's traditional believes (beliefs) will undermine their fixed values and generate sense of insecurity, therefore these great individuals are always viewed as heretics. Tanjiazhen, the genetisist (geneticist) and founder of school of life science of Fudan University, challenged the prevailing authorities of China biology at that time, by introducing theory of Morgan and was despised by his peers. However, ten years later, his perspectives have been confirmed and he has been respected as one of pioneers in China biology by later people.(十年是不是太短了?) Under such circumstances, these eminent figures gain their due appreciations from later generations rather than by their contemporaries.
Furthermore, in natural sciences, without being tested over time, (接受时间的检验?)it is difficult for many scientific achievements to be validated. The importance of these achievements has to wait many years, even centuries, to be justified only after the extensive accumulation of data and proof. So, without longstanding evidence to substantiate a creative theory, it is uneasy for people of its time (its 代表什么?)to understand and make correct judgment about it. The application of a kind of medicine should be experimented on animals before human being for millions of times and its effectiveness can be confirmed only after by curing lots of patients without side-effects. Such a long process renders the inventor's peers unable to evaluate his (his指代不清)results and the appraisal job can only left to his descendents.(我觉得药物试验可以由同代人完成吧)
Concerning the arts and literatures, a large number of great artists gain their reputation after their death. Their masterpieces have sustainable influence on later generations. For example, Emily Bronte and her worker were disparaged by her contemporaries critics and she suffered undeserved ignorance and die early at 31 years regretfully. Whereas, today, Emily now has been credited one of the most outstanding women writers in the world; and her great novel-Wuthering Heights has been honored as "the modern Sphinx" and ranked as milestone of human literature; Vincent Van Gogh suffered the fate of the incomprehension of his colleagues and lead his entire life penuriously. Numerous works of this great artist who only sold one piece of his work when he was live are priceless for current people. Examples like these are not uncommon and these mistakes are easily committed but the precious qualities can stand the assessment of time.(语言很强啊, 例子写得很精彩)
However, in the realm of sports, in most cases, greatness can be appreciated by current people instantly. For instance, if anyone can gain championship of NBA six times as Michle Jordan, it is unlikely for people to deny his greatness. Similarly, Liu Xiang, the famous athlete in China, as the first Chinese who win the championship at field sports in Olympic game is acknowledged as an extraordinary athlete by all contemporary people. Not only can their achievements will be recognized by posterities(这个单词很牛啊,都没见过,Hyper-GRE word!) but they have been admired by current people as well.
In summary, many great individuals, especially in the realm of science and arts, hardly acquire broad recognition during their own time. Nevertheless, other great achievements, such as sports ones can be confirmed by both of their peers and posterities. |
