It is possible that no one can deny the fact that some nonminstream areas of inquiry, as well as mainstream one, play a role in society by satisfying human demands. While, the question is : are they vital? which one, nonmainstream or mainstream one , has a vital influence on the society?

The mainstream science, broadly defined as the utilization and study of life, has a long history. Ever since our ancestor learned to get fire by sever friction among stones, people have been using the science and on the contrary, the science, that is called mainstream one, also attached influence on the human beings. Only recently do I come to realize how great the changes the mainstream brought us. The benefits of mainstream science present are particularly ambiguous. They have made work ever more efficient and knit the world together in a web of information and phone lines. Hungry? You order your hamburgers from an online delivery service. Bored? download a new game. And yet…

What is more, looking back to the history of mankind and we will suddenly find the interesting fact that the society moved forward greatly always together with the roar of any kind of new technology. the invention of steam engine, as all may know, brought about the first industrialization revolution, and it enable the great Britain to be the most mighty country at that time. And also ,the appear of computers and internet, which is called the third revolution of human beings, does change our lives. We may find a job and make friends on internet, which was hardly imagined in the past. Even today, we can conduct almost everything on internet and computer. So the above mentioned analysis indicates that it is the mainstream science, more than anything else, play a vital role in society.

On the other hand, can the mainstream science offer us everything? Admittedly, we can benefit a lot from it. We have a better living condition, but still do we complain such as lack of safety, unhappiness, and so on. What is the main reason for this phenomenon? It may be due to the science itself, which is regarded as a double-edged sword. For example. We can make friends on internet but are they real friends? We can do something but is it real? Since the industrial revolution, we have been haunted by the prospect that we are turning our machines efficient, effective, productive, and soulless. That is to say, the mainstream science, we think, emphasizes a spiritual crisis. And the nonmainstream science which is always taken as metaphysical, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits can just compensate the harmfulness brought about by the mainstream one. One may feel comfortable and calm after accepting the suggestion of metaphysical one. It may also interpret some supernatural phenomenon, which is beyond the reach of the mainstream science. As a result, it can partly satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

The above mentioned analysis indicates the fact that not only the mainstream science but also the nonmainstream one will both have an influence on the growth of the society. whereas, it is mainstream science that plays a fundamental role in the growth of the society.
