"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
The speaker concludes that all college faculty should work outside the academic world in professions related to the courses they teach. To some extent, I tend to agree with the statement. That faculty work outside benefits not only themselves but also all students.
First of all, faculty who are actively engaged in social is easier to obtain new ideas and solve practical problems in daily life. For instance, it is useless for professors in the field of animal nutrition to stay in their offices or labs, rather than pig farm. It is most likely that their mind will dry of new ideas. They have to extend the scope of people who they meet and things they experience. By changing their mind with various experts, their eyes will be open and what is most needed in the society will be clearly known. It is more likely that they can solve more practical problems. Moreover, practical experience can boost a professor’s credibility as an expert in the field.
Furthermore, students can get benefit by professors’ keeping pace with the changing world. It is entirely possible that professors will tell students their fresh experience in the class, so that students can get knowledge indirectly. Also, by involving in the society, up-to-date information about current job market will be imparted to them. They will give more practical and useful advice to students.
Nonetheless, the main duty for teachers is to initiate students’ interest in study, impart knowledge. If they spend much time on working in the field related to the course they teach, the time spent on course will be very little. It is harm to the development of students and breaches the teachers’ responsibility. After all, the faculty is not really working outside.
To sum up, only if the faculty perform very well in the school, they are allowed and encouraged to work in the field related to the course.
