I concede that pragmatic behavior guarantees our survival and temporary success in a short term, as the author asserts. However, idealistic views bring us a long-term motivation to attain brilliant achievement in academics, business, social politics and so forth.

Referring to academics, students tend to pursue pragmatic knowledge and capacity which help them find a good job after graduation. Sophisticated students at college will calculate education cost and hope to repay from a high proceeds occupation after graduating. They are engaged in studying compute skills and business management, but comparably lack in interest in philosophy and history. However, the idealistic view is crucial to the students who aspire to accept further education and attain brilliant achievement in academic. The students with idealistic views keep stronger curiosity and a good imagination to academic than others with pragmatic views. The ideal will encourage them to make a great effort to attain own goal in a long term.

Considering business, obviously pursuing profit maximization is a fundamental business principle. To survive in market competition, enterprises do their best to increase their sale, improve their service and decline their produce cost. Yet, what is more important to a corporation, the chasing of profit or responsibility to society? Different from the ordinary employee, the leaders and executive must have a long term plan and strategy which will guarantee the corporation gaining a good reputation in the community or the states. When making greatly important decisions, they must consider the values and social obligence of the corporation.

In the realm of politics, it seems that the pragmatic behavior is best. The politics is full of confliction and struggle among parties or officers. To guarantee own power, in other word, to survive, the politic leader is driven by election. Diplomatic and legal activities often meet the practical needs of the parties. But, if they don't take a ideal approach, the social reformation and political revolution don't happen. For example, the very founders of the US unite on the base of an credibly ideals and work out the Declaration of Independence which still serves as the blueprint for the architect of present leaders and American citizens.

In sum, although pragmatic behavior can guarantee our survival, the important function of idealistic views is not omitted. The very idealistic view leads us to succeed in long term and constituted the very force to propel the development civilization in the course of human history.
