Is the only responsibility of corporate executives to maximize profits for their companies within the law, as the speaker asserts? In my view, the assertion has noteable merits in some aspects; however the speaker unnecessarily limits this responsibility to the only one and merely within the law while ignoring certain compelling argument, which is unjustifiable.

First of all, it is true that the core responsibility of corporate executives is to maximize profits for their companies within the law. As it is known to all, the executive of a company as one member of the corporation should be committed to the company by earning as much money as he or she could, which is the most important responsibility to the executive. Profits maximization can expand the company's economy, which implies more job opportunities for the society and the improving welfare for the corporate staff. Moreover, with many more profits the corporation can provide more money on the improvement of surrounding environment and the workplace condition. Thus, the most significant responsibility of corporate executives is undoubted profits maximization.  

However, no corporative executive who are merely committed to earn money will ever succeed in their career. As an executive, whether he or she is beneficial to our society is not merely judged by how much money he or she can earn or how many working positions he or she create for society. There is something more important than financial accomplishment, which are more benefits in social activities. Consider, for instance, the chief executive officer of Microsoft, Bill Gates, is a successful CEO not only because he earns hundreds of thousands of dollars but also for he is a generous charitarian. He has been among the top charitarian for several years and the money he donated is mainly for the development plans in the Third world. Therefore, profits maximization is the most significant responsibility of corporate executives but not the only one.

Additionally, the responsibility of corporate executives is not only to make money within the law but also within high ethical standard. It is common that the development of technology take precedence of legislation of certain laws. Therefore, some high technology based companies are harmful to society though they operate within current laws. For example, some highly polluted companies are forbidden to produce goods in some states according to some environmental laws. So the executive of the company move the workplace to other states which have no such laws. In these circumstances, the responsibility of corporate executives is not only to operate within laws but also within ethical standards.

In sum, I agree with the assertion insofar as the responsibility of corporate executives is to maximize profits within the law. Yet, in this era of rapidly developing technology and economy, the corporation as a component of the society should focus more social obligations than making money.

In sum, I agree with the assertion insofar as the responsibility of corporate executives is to maximize profits within the law. Yet, in this era of rapidly developing technology and economy, the corporation as a component of the society should focus more social obligations than making money.

standard挺不错的。这样也很好。就是最后的例子不够具体！
还有盖茨例子的问题你考虑一下。

executives 先有较高的道德，不做违背道德的事，之后再说为社会做贡献吧。
