In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

The speaker suggests that if we want to improve the quality of instruction at the collage and university level, all faculties must work outside collage to learn the things relevant the courses they teach. May be he thinks that the teachers know more about outside school, as job working, situation, and knowledge what the practical work needs, and teach students, can help students better adapt the society when the graduate from collage. But I do not think this is a very effective method.

First of all, the basic skills and theories can help students to adapt to any work. When graduates leave from school into the society, they will find a job first, which may be his major in collage or not, and even with his major but not exactly as what he learned in the university. Also jobs will change, no one will stay for a job whole life today. In addition, society changes fast, students learn in the classroom may not fit well when they go to work. So the basic skills like language, communication, moral characters and the major theories is important.

Second, all faculties should not to work outside really but understand the reality condition and teach students. Teachers in the university, must do some research and teaching, that have no time to work outside the collage. In addition, when the do the research and programs, they have the better understand of his research field also his teaching professions, that is enough to teach his students. And teacher live in the society, when they do research, especially some engineering programs, they have more chance to do the practical work, and they have plenty experience. So teachers need not to work outside.

But that is not say teaching practical skills and knowledge are not important, instead, that is very useful for students to learn well. When teach students, if teachers can integrate the theories with practical knowledge, cases and experiences, students can not only remember the theories but also combine the theories with the practical and better understand them. That is not say that teacher should work outside, understanding the practical world is enough, the crucial thing is the method to teach. Even if the teachers work outside the academic world, but don’t know how to teach, is no useful.

In conclusion, if teachers in the collage and university to improve the quality of instruction, they should teach students the basic skills and knowledge for them to live in the society and much practical knowledge, but not spend time working outside, and the teaching method is important.
