Must a public official maintain the highest moral and ethical standards so as to be a successful leader, as the speaker asserted? I fundamentally agree with the speaker's broad assertion, yet the speaker unnecessarily extends a high moral standard to the highest ethical standards while ignoring certain compelling reasons. I will discuss this complex issue mainly in two distinct respects: business and political.
In the realm of business, an effective corporate leader must be someone who maintains high ethical and moral standards. As
to our common sense, the most significant responsibility of corporate leaders is to maximize profits for the corporation. However, if the profits maximization is at the expense of environment and the health of corporate staff, the reputation of the corporation will be inevitable ruined. Accordingly, the leader's efficiency and working ability are doubted. To the contrary, if the corporate leader can not only maximize profit for the company but also be subjected to certain social obligations, the company will exceedingly obtain good social reputation, and the corporate leader will also be considered effective as well as successful. Consider, Bill Gates, the chief executive officer of Microsoft, who is considered as one of the most successful CEO not only because of the profit he made for the company, but also for his social activities as a charitarian.
比尔的例子很有代表性。
In political realm, a successful political leader also requires high ethical and moral standards. A high ethical and moral standard can prevent those political leaders from abusing their authorities and committing corruption, as well as build a convincing public image. Yet, political leaders who have low ethical and moral standards will eventually forfeit leadership. For example, Hitler, who built his power by some extreme means, invariably lost leadership. Another example involves the Water Gate scandal, President Nixon, who spurned at the national law system ultimately failed in his presidential career.
Hitler的例子再说明白些,他的那方面道德败坏, such as slaughter Jewish people.
However, a political leader is not a moral leader and a personal immorality has no effect to his successful leadership. A political leader's job is mainly to build, maintain and expand the wealth, prosperity and political influence of his nation, thus a political leader can still be considered as an effective leader although with some personal immorality. For example, the former president Bill Clinton, who was obsessed by the sex scandal during his Presidential term. However, nobody would deny that he is an effective leader for during his Presidential term the United States is in a relatively peaceful time of prosperity and economic growth. Another telling example is the former President Kennedy, aside from his marital discretions which might be his privacy, he is undoubted an effective political leader.
To sum up, I agree with the statement insofar as an effective leader requires high ethical and moral standards. However, as discussed above in the political realm, an effective leader is not a moralist, so it is unnecessarily to extend to the highest standards.
思路很清晰,论证也很好,北美这篇分析得不错,你举的例子:Bill Clinton, Water Gate scandal, and Bill Gates 都比较典型了,建议换一下,我们身边的也可以,这样更不会被判雷同吧。 |
